Entrepreneur and bestselling author Ankur Warikoo believes that is exactly where people go wrong.

In a LinkedIn post that has struck a chord online, Warikoo shared the five money rules he and his wife Ruchi have followed as a couple. The entrepreneur, now 46, said neither of them was born into wealth and that “real abundance came only in the last 6-7 years.”

The couple, who have two children aged 15 and 9, say these habits have shaped how they think about money.

1. DON’T SPEND TO LOOK RICH

Warikoo’s first rule is simple: “We don’t spend to look rich. We spend to become wealthy.”

Instead of chasing expensive lifestyles, he said most of their money goes into assets such as stocks and gold. The family owns one house and drives a rented car, avoiding purchases meant only to impress others.

2. PAY MORE FOR WHAT MATTERS

The second rule is about health.

Warikoo said the family spends generously on high-quality food because “what goes into your body matters most.” He shared that their vegetables are grown organically on a rented farm and that they rarely order food from outside.

3. BUY MEMORIES, NOT MORE STUFF

The entrepreneur also believes experiences create more value than possessions.

He revealed that the family travelled 116 days last year, adding that they happily spend on live sporting events, museums or even hiring historians to explain the places they visit.

4. INVEST BEFORE YOU SPEND

Perhaps the most practical lesson in the post is the couple’s investment habit.

“The day our income arrives, we invest. We live on what’s left,” Warikoo wrote.

By the end of each month, he said, only a few thousand rupees remain because the rest of the money has already been invested.

5. LEARNING HAS NO LIMIT

The final rule is one many finance experts also recommend: keep investing in yourself.

Warikoo said the family has “no budget for books and learning.” Their living room functions like a library, and all four family members regularly read books and take classes ranging from pottery and piano to Python programming.

He ended the post with a reminder that these rules work for his family but may not suit everyone.

“These are our rules. They may not be yours. But everyone needs their own.”

– Ends

Published On:

Aug 6, 2026 19:36 IST

For many people, earning more often leads to spending more.
