We want to hear from you"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>PEOPLE ARE DRINKING less in Ireland on average, but many of those who are drinking are more likely to do so at home.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thejournal.ie\/ireland-alcohol-consumption-figures-7113998-Jul2026\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">report<\/a> by economist Anthony Foley on behalf of the Drinks Industry Group of Ireland (DIGI) last month found that alcohol consumption has fallen by more than a third since it peaked in 2001.<\/p>\n<p>When you take into account the rising price of a pint (the national average cost was \u20ac6.32 in May) and continued <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drinksindustry.ie\/news\/new-report-finds-over-2100-pubs-have-closed-since-2005\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pub closures<\/a>, it\u2019s no wonder that the rate of people drinking at home has increased.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Recent research by <a href=\"https:\/\/drinkaware.ie\/irish-drinking-habits-permanently-altered-post-pandemic-as-2020-2025-barometer-data-shows-55-of-adults-who-drink-are-now-most-likely-to-drink-at-home-says-drinkaware\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Drinkaware<\/a>\u00a0found that 55% of Irish drinkers\u00a0said they are more likely to drink at home than in public social settings.<\/p>\n<p>Almost one in three (31%) of drinkers said they consume alcohol on a weekly basis at home, more than double the rate (15%) of acknowledged home drinking in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly a quarter (24%) of drinkers said they engage in binge drinking, up from 20% in 2020.
