While first-borns in the study had a higher risk of neurodevelopmental conditions like ADHD and immune-allergic diseases like food allergies, second-borns were at greater risk for gastrointestinal disorders and substance abuse disorders. However, there are a few theories.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"17\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">\u201cIt is possible there is something inherent to the order,\u201d says <a href=\"http:\/\/medicine.buffalo.edu\/faculty\/profile.html?ubit=markhica\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"http:\/\/medicine.buffalo.edu\/faculty\/profile.html?ubit=markhica\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Mark Hicar, M.D., Ph.D\" data-node-id=\"17.1\" class=\"body-link css-hllz2d emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Mark Hicar, M.D., Ph.D<\/a>., chief of pediatric infectious diseases at the University at Buffalo Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences in Buffalo, New York. \u201cThere are biological differences between the first pregnancy and subsequent pregnancies, including age, changes to mom\u2019s body, and differences in immune responses.\u201d Each baby technically contains foreign material from the father that the mother\u2019s immune system must become tolerant to, which \u201chas been shown to improve with subsequent pregnancies,\u201d Dr. Hicar adds.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"18\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Rzhetsky points out that siblings also tend to share a microbiome. \u201cThis could explain signals in infectious diseases, allergies, and the potential protective effect of a small age gap for neurodevelopmental conditions,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"19\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">It also could have something to do with parental behavior. First-time parents may be more likely to escalate a concern to a healthcare provider, prompting an evaluation and diagnosis, compared to when they have more children, Rzhetsky says. The parents\u2019 age may matter, too. \u201cStructurally, birth order correlates with parental age at birth, meaning first-borns inherently have younger parents,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"20\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Dr. Hicar agrees that how parents treat first-borns and second-borns may have an effect. \u201cIf your first-born has a neurological condition, you may get more testing with subsequent pregnancies,\u201d he says. \u201cAnother example is that planned environmental and dietary exposures tend to be stricter with first-borns than later pregnancies as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"21\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\"><a rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/mdmercy.com\/find-a-doctor\/ashanti-w-woods-md\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/mdmercy.com\/find-a-doctor\/ashanti-w-woods-md\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Ashanti Woods, M.D.\" data-node-id=\"21.0\" class=\"body-link css-hllz2d emevuu60\">Ashanti Woods, M.D.<\/a>, a pediatrician at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore, stresses that, at least for now, there are no clear answers. \u201cAs a pediatrician, I welcome such research to hopefully one day be able to thoughtfully answer, \u2018What caused my baby\u2019s &#8230;\u2019 questions from parents,\u201d he says. \u201cWith that said, with any research study, it is important to delineate correlation from causation. In other words, is this truly a cause of this condition, or simply a pattern observed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong data-node-id=\"22.0\">What does this mean for your actual disease risk?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"23\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">That\u2019s tricky. The study looked at odds ratios, which is how likely you are to develop a disease compared to your sibling. But that doesn\u2019t mean that someone will actually develop a disease based on birth order, or that their real-world risk is all that high\u2014just that it\u2019s relatively elevated, as compared to their sibling\u2019s risk. \u201cWe are talking about population effects. At the individual level, the effects are subtle,\u201d Rzhetsky says.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"24\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Diseases are also complicated, points out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.providence.org\/doctors\/profile\/200515-danelle-mara-fisher\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.providence.org\/doctors\/profile\/200515-danelle-mara-fisher\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Danelle Fisher, M.D\" data-node-id=\"24.1\" class=\"body-link css-hllz2d emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Danelle Fisher, M.D<\/a>., a pediatrician at Providence Saint John\u2019s Health Center in Santa Monica, California. \u201cThere are a lot of factors that go into many of these diseases,\u201d she says. \u201cBirth order may be possibly one in a number of factors that could influence disease rates.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"25\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Rzhetsky agrees.
