Baby Boomers, meanwhile, are the generation that actually got the deal the American Dream promised: cheap houses, pensions, a stock market that mostly went up. Neither group was supposed to be the one lying awake over money.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And yet: Gen X now has the lowest consumer confidence of any American generation, a six-month average of 78 points on the Conference Board\u2019s <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.conference-board.org\/topics\/consumer-confidence\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.conference-board.org\/topics\/consumer-confidence\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Consumer Confidence Index<\/a>\u2014its worst reading in at least four and a half years. Boomers aren\u2019t far behind, at 83, also their lowest since October 2021. Both have been sliding steadily since early 2025. This is the first generation of Americans hitting their 50s while simultaneously managing aging parents\u2019 care and dependent kids\u2019 expenses, at the exact life stage psychologists call the bottom of the <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC7529452\/\" href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC7529452\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">U-shaped happiness curve<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.allianzlife.com\/about\/newsroom\/2026-Press-Releases\/Fear-Of-Running-Out-of-Money-Over-Death-At-Record-High\" href=\"https:\/\/www.allianzlife.com\/about\/newsroom\/2026-Press-Releases\/Fear-Of-Running-Out-of-Money-Over-Death-At-Record-High\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.allianzlife.com\/about\/newsroom\/2026-Press-Releases\/Fear-Of-Running-Out-of-Money-Over-Death-At-Record-High\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">numbers<\/a> back up the squeeze: 70% of Gen Xers say they fear running out of money more than they fear death, higher than millennials (66%) or boomers (61%). Nearly half\u201444%\u2014say they aren\u2019t confident they can save enough for retirement, worse than millennials (35%) or boomers (40%). A 2024 <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/news.northwesternmutual.com\/planning-and-progress-study-2024\" href=\"https:\/\/news.northwesternmutual.com\/planning-and-progress-study-2024\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Northwestern Mutual study<\/a> found Gen X believes it needs $1.56 million to retire comfortably but has saved an average of just $108,600\u2014a $1.45 million gap. And in a <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.cfp.net\/news\/2025\/09\/cfp-board-survey-uncovers-gen-xs-biggest-financial-regrets\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfp.net\/news\/2025\/09\/cfp-board-survey-uncovers-gen-xs-biggest-financial-regrets\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CFP Board survey<\/a>, 95% of Gen Xers said their financial regrets have already cost them real money, with 59% reporting stress and 40% reporting anxiety directly tied to it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Boomers: wealthy on paper, anxious in practice<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s not just the sandwich generation struggling. Baby boomers make up 20% of the U.S. population and hold 31% of the country\u2019s wealth, or about <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.federalreserve.gov\/releases\/z1\/dataviz\/dfa\/distribute\/chart\/#quarter:143;series:Net%20worth;demographic:generation;population:1,3,5,7;units:levels;range:1989.3,2025.2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.federalreserve.gov\/releases\/z1\/dataviz\/dfa\/distribute\/chart\/#quarter:143;series:Net%20worth;demographic:generation;population:1,3,5,7;units:levels;range:1989.3,2025.2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">$85 trillion in assets<\/a>, but that massive sum isn\u2019t equally distributed among the generation. Pew Research Center found that in 2022, the top 10% of Boomer households <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/short-reads\/2026\/02\/11\/are-baby-boomers-wealthier-than-previous-generations-of-older-adults\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/short-reads\/2026\/02\/11\/are-baby-boomers-wealthier-than-previous-generations-of-older-adults\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">held 71% of the generation\u2019s wealth<\/a>, creating a lopsided effect where a handful could comfortably retire, while most have few financial resources for the next chapter of their lives. Nearly one-third of Americans 55 or older have no retirement savings, and of those with savings, about half have less than $100,000 in their accounts, according to a GoBankingRates <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.barrattorneys.com\/blog\/baby-boomers-by-the-numbers-retirement-looks-bleak\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.barrattorneys.com\/blog\/baby-boomers-by-the-numbers-retirement-looks-bleak\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">survey<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For that chunk of older Americans, there\u2019s plenty of reason to be worried about making finite financial resources last. Boomers and the Silent Generation in particular face rising healthcare costs as a result of living longer, and still have to afford groceries just on retirement funds, according to Morgan Ward, professor of consumer behavior at Emory University\u2019s Goizueta Business School<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen the time horizons are shorter, you\u2019re more sensitive to these swings because you know that you want to be able to access your money,\u201d Ward told Fortune. \u201cYou can imagine that if there\u2019s a really negative swing, you don\u2019t have the time to wait for the market to recover.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.aarp.org\/caregiving\/financial-legal\/long-term-care-affordability-report\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aarp.org\/caregiving\/financial-legal\/long-term-care-affordability-report\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AARP report<\/a> published in June found home care inflation rose 7.9% in the last five years, nearly double the rate of overall inflation and triple medical inflation, meaning that for many households, the cost of long-term care outpaced income. For example, nursing home costs soared 25% between 2019 and 2024, while household income for those over 65 grew 22% over the same period.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why Gen Z and millennials aren\u2019t rattled<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While older generations may be concerned with making sure their assets can last them the course of their lifetime, young people are just beginning their investment journeys, with more than half of Gen Z learning about investing before entering the workforce, compared to 20% of Boomers, according to 2024 <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/stories\/2026\/01\/gen-z-financial-investment-trust\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/stories\/2026\/01\/gen-z-financial-investment-trust\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">World Economic Forum survey data<\/a>. Gen Z and millennials have amassed a record <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2026\/08\/05\/gen-z-millennials-housing-stocks\/\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2026\/08\/05\/gen-z-millennials-housing-stocks\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">$3.1 trillion in holdings<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their interest in the stock market comes as buying a house remains out of reach for many, with <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fred.stlouisfed.org\/series\/CSUSHPINSA\" href=\"https:\/\/fred.stlouisfed.org\/series\/CSUSHPINSA\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">home prices skyrocketing 235%<\/a> since January 2000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFor younger adults who despair about ever being able to buy a home, investing in financial markets can be a great way to save until they can afford one,\u201d Chen Zhao, the head of economics research at Redfin, <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2026\/08\/05\/gen-z-millennials-housing-stocks\/\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2026\/08\/05\/gen-z-millennials-housing-stocks\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">told Fortune<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ward explained that despite being unable to attain traditional markers of economic success such as home-buying, Gen Z is able to find financial empowerment elsewhere, not just through investing, but paving the way for their own careers. The generation of digital natives has a distrust of authority and skepticism toward traditional paths of education, <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/12\/17\/genz-millennials-founders-entrepreneurship-sustainability-wealth\/\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/12\/17\/genz-millennials-founders-entrepreneurship-sustainability-wealth\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">engendering an entrepreneurial spirit<\/a>, she argued. A <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/institute.bankofamerica.com\/content\/dam\/economic-insights\/new-generation-of-business-formation.pdf\" href=\"https:\/\/institute.bankofamerica.com\/content\/dam\/economic-insights\/new-generation-of-business-formation.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bank of America Institute report<\/a> published last month found Gen Z is \u201cdisproportionately\u201d contributing to a boost in business growth, with Gen Z business applications growing about 66% year-over-year as of June, about the same as millennials, Gen X, and Boomers combined.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou are not completely reliant anymore on a big company hiring you and then you retire in 35 years with a gold watch,\u201d Ward said. \u201cI think people feel a little more self-reliant.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It doesn\u2019t hurt that more young people are also <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/10\/08\/does-gen-z-live-with-their-parents-housing-study-15-million-more\/\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/10\/08\/does-gen-z-live-with-their-parents-housing-study-15-million-more\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">living at home<\/a> after college, relieving pressure to make rent or pay for other expenses, Ward added.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where pessimism remains<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s not to say younger generations are without economic anxiety. Gen Z\u2019s AI adoption has basically stalled over the last year, with the generation growing more sour on the technology as <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/06\/17\/opinion\/ai-dangerous-openai-anthropic.html\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/06\/17\/opinion\/ai-dangerous-openai-anthropic.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">discourse over its ability to automate entry-level jobs<\/a> continues. According to an April <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/poll\/708224\/gen-adoption-steady-skepticism-climbs.aspx\" href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/poll\/708224\/gen-adoption-steady-skepticism-climbs.aspx\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gallup poll<\/a>, Gen Z\u2019s excitement around AI fell 14 percentage points to 22%, and anger toward AI increased nine percentage points to 31%.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moreover, Gen Z adults looking to buy a home are having to conceive that it may be a fantasy, with 34% of the generation worried they may not be able to ever afford a house, and 31% postponing the purchase because of financial pressures, per Northwestern Mutual\u2019s 2026 <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/news.northwesternmutual.com\/planning-and-progress-study-2026\" href=\"https:\/\/news.northwesternmutual.com\/planning-and-progress-study-2026\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Planning &amp; Progress study<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But young people\u2019s confidence\u2014and older generations\u2019 apprehension\u2014of the economy may be completely separate from job prospects and inflation, argued Francesco D\u2019Acunto, a finance professor at Georgetown University. Gen Z has already weathered a pandemic are grappling with the impact of a war and technological revolution.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPrecisely because their expectations already start from a relatively pessimistic baseline, additional negative news (such as geopolitical tensions or inflation) tends to move their short-term expectations less,\u201d D\u2019Acunto told Fortune in an email. \u201cIn a sense, they have already priced in a difficult future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the other hand, Baby Boomers in particular, though faced with their own times of war and economic hardship, entered the housing market in the 1970s when <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.ebsco.com\/research-starters\/history\/real-estate-boom-1970s\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ebsco.com\/research-starters\/history\/real-estate-boom-1970s\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">inflation surged<\/a> and made home-buying an appealing investment.
