{"id":627584,"date":"2026-08-08T20:11:14","date_gmt":"2026-08-08T20:11:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/627584\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T20:11:14","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T20:11:14","slug":"maurice-macgowan-had-a-beautiful-and-noble-soul-funeral-told-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/627584\/","title":{"rendered":"Maurice MacGowan had \u2018a beautiful and noble soul\u2019, funeral told \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Maurice MacGowan, the father of the late singer and frontman of The Pogues <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/shane-macgowan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/shane-macgowan\/\">Shane MacGowan<\/a>, had \u201ca beautiful and noble soul\u201d, his only remaining child told mourners at his funeral in Co <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/clare\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/clare\">Clare<\/a> on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A photograph of Maurice MacGowan, who was originally from Ranelagh in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin\/\">Dublin<\/a> and late of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/tipperary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/tipperary\">Tipperary<\/a>, was placed on a wall overlooking his wicker coffin which was adorned with bright yellow and orange flowers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Maurice MacGowan died on Monday morning, aged 96.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cMaurice is gone and he\u2019s going to be with his beloved Therese and Shane and I\u2019m sure there\u2019s going to be a hell of a hooley in heaven,\u201d his daughter, Siobhan MacGowan, said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mourners gathered at Shannon Crematorium heard from the ceremony\u2019s celebrant that he \u201cwas a bright and shining beacon of light for so many\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Victoria Mary Clarke, Shane MacGowan\u2019s widow, read a translation of The Broad Majestic Shannon in Irish, a song composed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/the-pogues\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/the-pogues\/\">The Pogues<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe first time I met Maurice was at Christmas in 1986,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI went to a bar and bought him a gin and tonic. And he said: \u2018Women don\u2019t buy drinks.\u2019 He said to Shane, \u2018I like her\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She said her late husband was \u201cunfiltered like Maurice. He had a bullsh*t radar he inherited from his da. Maurice wrote poetry, he composed music, he translated Greek and Latin but he did all these things for himself. Photograph: Martyn Goodacre\/Getty Images <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI always felt Shane had inherited this very, very valuable gift which is something parents try to give their children &#8230; there wasn\u2019t a better gift to give a child, than the gift of believing in themselves which he did. Maurice was very funny, he had a razor sharp wit. He got on great with my mum and dad and with our family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Clarke revealed that Maurice MacGowan had \u201csupported me so much when Shane died\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cHe was always there he really was. I always felt this great big man was at my back, he had my back. He adored his children so much.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The crematorium was filled with musicians such as renowned accordion player Sharon Shannon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Siobhan MacGowan explained that a Lullaby of London, created by her brother Shane, was chosen by her because it is about an Irish father who spoke to his children, all of whom were living in London.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She recounted how her father made \u201can impact not only on his large extended family, with long term friends who knew and loved him but on those he had only encountered briefly. But that comes as little surprise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI only had to say the word dad for a smile of recognition to break across their lips. A smile that I know that Dad did something outrageous and definitely humorous was likely to follow.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cHe had a roguish, an irreverence, a sharp wit and a fierce sense of humour, yet a gentleness, a deep intelligence, a compassion for his fellow man, a caring for their wellbeing and not only for human kinds wellbeing, but with every being that shared the planet, every animal, very insect in the natural world he also cared for.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIn the last days of his life when he was in University Hospital Limerick all was quiet in the room. It was twilight and I kept the lights off so he could rest, it was not a profound moment.
