Rippling patterns of light and dark.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cms7niplh003h3b6rmi74tb4z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Solar eclipse watchers have for centuries vividly described an eerie phenomenon known as shadow bands that appears just before and after totality \u2014 the period when the moon completely blocks the sun\u2019s light and the sky goes dark. Long dark lines, separated by white spaces, race across the ground or sides of buildings.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cms7niu08003j3b6r5qhygfr4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            David Turnshek, a professor of physics and astronomy at the University of Pittsburgh, first witnessed shadow bands as a teenager.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cms7niu08003k3b6r0io05fi2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI guess I would have been 14 years old. I went to see a total eclipse near Virginia Beach. It was 1970, and I had made my own telescope, and I went down there to try to photograph the eclipse,\u201d said Turnshek, who is also the director of the Allegheny Observatory in Pittsburgh.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cms7niu08003l3b6ryru6d0p4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cAnd while I was down there, I noticed right before the total eclipse, these bands of light were sweeping across the ground.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cms7niu08003m3b6rtzbgvhnj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The human eye can easily detect shadow bands, but they are difficult to photograph and capture on video because of the subtle contrast.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cms7niu08003n3b6rfpm6gaf5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Turnshek\u2019s research as an astronomer has primarily focused on galaxy formation and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/02\/13\/science\/distant-giant-quasar-jet\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">quasars, the luminous cores<\/a> of distant, ancient galaxies. However, he has retained his youthful curiosity about shadow bands \u2014 a phenomenon with two competing theories but no definitive explanation.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cms7niu08003o3b6r872rrbtk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            An <a href=\"https:\/\/cnn.com\/2026\/06\/06\/science\/total-solar-eclipse-path-august\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">upcoming total solar eclipse<\/a> on Wednesday will provide scientists with another opportunity to study this mystery. After securing NASA funding to study the occurrence, Turnshek traveled to Tennessee with a group of University of Pittsburgh undergraduates who called themselves the Pitt shadow bandits.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cms7niu08003r3b6rciv6yvzx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Their goal was to test the leading theory, first put forward in the 1980s, that turbulence \u2014 the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/234344209_The_scintillation_theory_of_eclipse_shadow_bands\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">irregular motion of air currents<\/a> in the atmosphere \u2014 caused shadow bands. When the moon obscures most of the sun just before totality, leaving only a thin sliver of sunlight, the turbulence becomes visible. It\u2019s the same reason why stars, when viewed from Earth, appear to twinkle. However, in the case of the sun, the effect isn\u2019t usually visible because of its massive size.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cms7niu08003s3b6ra3rx9psz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The group placed light detectors called photodiodes on the ground and on board a high-altitude balloon, which collected data on the light patterns before and after totality.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/img-0658-20260805145758772.jpg\" alt=\"The University of Pittsburgh research team prepares a high-altitude balloon.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"4000\" width=\"3000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cms7niu08003t3b6rt6osaa6q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            This data was then analyzed using spectrograms, a way of visually representing the strength of light waves and how they change over time. If the prevailing theory was correct, the team would observe shadow bands on the ground, but not on the balloon, which was 25 kilometers (15.5 miles) high \u2014 above most of Earth\u2019s atmosphere.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cms7niu08003u3b6ruz7soe8n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S1364682620302261\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">The results were surprising<\/a>, Turnshek recalled. The researchers found a sustained signal of 4.5 hertz \u2014 a measure of how often a light wave passes a fixed point per second, at both high altitude and on the ground.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cms7niu08003v3b6ra7id508i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe saw this effect above the atmosphere and on the ground, which meant that the leading theory for shadow bands could be wrong in the sense that that wasn\u2019t the only explanation for shadow bands,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cms7niu08003w3b6rxjyobwj1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The findings from the 2017 eclipse suggested another explanation, known as the diffraction-interference, might be responsible for shadow bands. Diffraction is what happens to light waves when they encounter an obstacle. For example, when light bends around a sharp obstacle or boundary, such as a knife edge, the waves bend and interfere with one another to create bands of dark and bright light.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cms7niu08003x3b6r0g68s90f@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cAt one point in time it was the most popular theory, that it was some kind of diffraction-interference effect,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cms7niu08003y3b6rw242p0p3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe thought is, \u2018Well, we have an eclipse, and the moon, even though it has a curved edge, acts as some kind of a knife edge.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cms7niu08003z3b6rxvymloy5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The team checked to make sure that the signal was not the result of faulty electronics that produced false readings. Turnshek and his student researchers looked for an opportunity to try and replicate the results, noting it didn\u2019t necessarily mean that the prevailing theory was incorrect.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cms7niu0800403b6r6w0s4u1c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWhen you have a complicated situation in science, it\u2019s often the case that two things are true at the same time, contributing to the phenomena,\u201d Turnshek said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cms7niu0800413b6rx6qmgox8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Nearly a decade later, during the April 8, 2024, total solar eclipse, Turnshek took another student research team to Concan, Texas, within the path of totality \u2014 and where the weather was expected to be clearest.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/240408195741-27b-eclipse-gallery-2024.jpg\" alt=\"An airplane passes by as the total solar eclipse is seen from Bloomington, Indiana, on Monday, April 8.\" class=\"image__dam-img image__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1534\" width=\"2574\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>      The solar eclipse, in pictures<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cms7niu0800423b6rmrehdj62@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Despite the researchers deploying more sensitive sensors and extending the scope of measurements, cloud cover meant that they <a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/2601.13335\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">did not detect shadow bands<\/a>. The team deployed two high-altitude balloons with light sensors and 31 weather balloons to measure temperature, pressure, wind speed and humidity.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cms7niu0900433b6r33p4ahg6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cFor the most part, it was cloudy on the ground, but we launched the two high-altitude balloons, and we didn\u2019t see any signal whatsoever due to shadow bands despite the fact that our detector was much more sensitive,\u201d Turnshek said. \u201cOf course, I was incredibly disappointed.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cms7niu0900443b6rhom74pvh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The team was also able to deploy an additional set of light sensors on an aircraft that flew in Vermont, where the skies were clearer. The spectrogram from the aircraft, however, did not show a 4.5 hertz signal \u2014 the pattern they found on the high-altitude balloon during the 2017 eclipse. The researchers also weren\u2019t able to make any corresponding ground-based shadow band observations in Vermont, making the data inconclusive.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cms7niu0900463b6rqv9qcy8e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Turnshek will travel to Le\u00f3n, Spain, with some colleagues to see the upcoming solar eclipse, but he said he will be unable to replicate the same experiment because of the logistical complexity involved. This time, he\u2019s primarily there as a tourist.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cms7niu0900473b6r756zo3wr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI decided initially I would just go to Spain and enjoy looking at the eclipse because it\u2019s an incredible thing, but of course, I couldn\u2019t help myself, and I\u2019m taking one of our electronic detectors to Spain.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/gettyimages-2147613449.jpg\" alt=\"The moon begins its descent below the sun's horizon during a total solar eclipse in April 2024 in Brady, Texas.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1999\" width=\"3000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cms7niu0900483b6rsicp45sj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            At best, Turnshek said he hopes to detect and capture video of the shadow bands, using the same ground-based equipment he deployed in Texas in 2024. But without measurements from above, using a plane or balloon, it won\u2019t be possible to resolve the ambiguous results.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cms7niu0900493b6rfjru56fy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cMaybe somebody will have read our 2017 and 2024 results, and will say, \u2018I\u2019m in Spain. I\u2019ve got a plane.\u2019\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>        How to see the shadow bands<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cms7niu09004b3b6rig2l66aw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Turnshek is not the only researcher looking to record shadow bands on Wednesday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cms7niu09004c3b6r14fj7k37@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Gordon Telepun, an eclipse chaser who worked as a NASA ambassador to share knowledge about eclipses in 2017 and 2024, will be on the Spanish island of Mallorca for the eclipse. He has seen shadow bands at five of the seven eclipses he has witnessed.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cms7niu09004d3b6rnfq5lcpk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cYou\u2019re not going to see them on grass or asphalt or something like that. You need a smooth, light-colored background,\u201d said Telepun, who has a created <a href=\"https:\/\/solareclipsetimer.com\/the-app\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">an eclipse app<\/a> that includes a reminder of when to look for the bands.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cms7niu09004e3b6ri2tzt6l7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIf you\u2019re going to see them, you have to know to look for rows. Know in your mind what you\u2019re looking for. They\u2019re going to be very faint.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cms7niu09004f3b6rnc68m106@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Shadow bands are easy to miss, he noted, because they happen just before totality \u2014 the most exciting time when viewers are wearing solar glasses and looking up at the final, thin crescent of the sun.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cms7niu09004g3b6rds2pryyi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Joe Conti, an independent researcher and physics enthusiast based in Massachusetts, is inviting eclipse observers across Iceland and Spain to capture the optical mystery on their smartphones <a href=\"https:\/\/citizenscience.eu\/project\/835\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">as part of a citizen science project.<\/a> Five groups have expressed interest in participating so far, he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/picture1-20260805145716987.jpg\" alt=\"The University of Pittsburgh researchers use a screen and sensor setup to capture shadow band phenomena during a total solar eclipse.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"862\" width=\"1224\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cms7niu09004h3b6r02wcnq7h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Conti recommends setting up a simple observation board made from cardboard and covering it with a white sheet. He said he hoped the data collected can perhaps help the broader scientific community close the book on what causes shadow bands.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cms7niu09004i3b6r49vwyoxd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For those lucky enough to be in the path of totality on Wednesday and wanting to catch a glimpse of shadow bands, Turnshek\u2019s advice is to be south of mountains and coast, where cloud cover is more likely to gather.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cms7niu09004j3b6r5ir3jfe2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            He also recommends heading west to make sure the sun is as high as possible in the sky.
