{"id":628298,"date":"2026-08-09T08:30:15","date_gmt":"2026-08-09T08:30:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/628298\/"},"modified":"2026-08-09T08:30:15","modified_gmt":"2026-08-09T08:30:15","slug":"woman-hopes-ms-drug-could-help-her-walk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/628298\/","title":{"rendered":"Woman hopes MS drug could help her walk"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">A partially blind woman who developed multiple sclerosis (MS) almost two decades ago is hoping a new NHS drug could help her walk again.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Jules Hobbs, who lives near Devizes in Wiltshire, said that <a data-ylk=\"slk:NHS England finally offering access to Fampridine has left her &quot;really hopeful&quot;.;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;link&quot;,&quot;yLinkElementType&quot;:&quot;article_link&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cgmkygjk9g2o?xtor=AL-72-%5Bpartner%5D-%5Byahoo.north.america%5D-%5Blink%5D-%5Bnews%5D-%5Bbizdev%5D-%5Bisapi%5D\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">NHS England finally offering access to Fampridine has left her &#8220;really hopeful&#8221;.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The medicine <a data-ylk=\"slk:known as a &quot;signal booster&quot;;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;link&quot;,&quot;yLinkElementType&quot;:&quot;article_link&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cgmkygjk9g2o?xtor=AL-72-%5Bpartner%5D-%5Byahoo.north.america%5D-%5Blink%5D-%5Bnews%5D-%5Bbizdev%5D-%5Bisapi%5D\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">known as a &#8220;signal booster&#8221;<\/a> helps electrical messages get through damaged nerve cells in charge of controlling muscles needed to walk.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Prof Frankie Swords, the NHS national medical director, said: &#8220;Walking difficulties can have a huge impact on the freedom and independence of people with MS, so this signal-boosting pill could be life-changing for thousands of patients.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>More from Wiltshire<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Multiple sclerosis is caused by the immune system attacking the protective covering around nerve cells &#8211; known as myelin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">This damage impairs the ability of nerves to carry electrical messages from the brain to the rest of the body &#8211; including those needed for the precise control of muscles needed to walk.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">But the medicine does not work for everyone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Emma Richards, from Gloucester, who privately used the drug a decade ago, said she saw no improvement to her mobility.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Richards said the medicine was portrayed to her as a miracle drug but &#8220;did not help me&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Nonetheless, Richards said it is still &#8220;really beneficial&#8221; to have the drug on the NHS as it does help lots of people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">More than 120,000 people live with MS in England. However, only about 5,000 people a year will be eligible to use the medicine &#8211; based on the extent of their walking difficulties.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Clinical trials showed about <a data-ylk=\"slk:four in 10 people;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;link&quot;,&quot;yLinkElementType&quot;:&quot;article_link&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cgmkygjk9g2o?xtor=AL-72-%5Bpartner%5D-%5Byahoo.north.america%5D-%5Blink%5D-%5Bnews%5D-%5Bbizdev%5D-%5Bisapi%5D\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">four in 10 people<\/a> taking the drug had improvements in their walking speed and in how long they could walk for.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"A set of electrodes attached to Jules' right calf .
