The Air Corps<\/a> flight carrying Daniel Kinahan<\/a> has taken off from Dubai, with the alleged cartel leader expected to land at Casement Aerodrome on Sunday evening ahead of a court appearance.<\/p>\n

The Government jet departed Al Maktoum International Airport at about 10.30am Irish time and is expected to arrive in Baldonnel, Co Dublin around 7pm. Kinahan will be arrested on arrival and taken before the Special Criminal Court.<\/p>\n

The Defence Forces flight, with a team of garda\u00ed<\/a> on board, flew out to Dubai on Saturday morning.<\/p>\n

The last leg of Kinahan\u2019s extradition was under way on Sunday after years of investigations into his alleged activities by the Garda Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau. <\/p>\n

Senior Garda members and Government ministers also engaged in a diplomatic process with their counterparts in the United Arab Emirates to ensure an extradition treaty was put in place.<\/p>\n

Dubliner Kinahan (49) is the first person to be extradited from UAE to the Republic under the new, permanent treaty, which came into force last year. <\/p>\n

His close associate, Sean McGovern, was extradited from UAE last year, under a special once-off arrangement. McGovern has since been sentenced to 24 years for directing the Kinahan cartel\u2019s crimes.<\/p>\n

Kinahan, who has lived openly in Dubai for 10 years with his wife and children, is expected to face a charge of directing organised crime when he appears before the Special Criminal Court in Dublin\u2019s north inner city on Sunday night.<\/p>\n

A major security operation, involving armed garda\u00ed from the force\u2019s specialist units, will be in place to escort him from Baldonnel across the city to the court building, where security will also be tight.<\/p>\n

After his court appearance, which is expected to be brief, he will be <\/p>\n

escorted to Portlaoise Prison by garda\u00ed traveling in a convoy of vehicles. <\/p>\n

Though the Irish Prison Service has acquired a bullet proof and blast proof prisoner escort van, which will be used for Kinahan and others in the future, it will not be used for him on Sunday. <\/p>\n

The Garda will be responsible for his escort from the Dublin court to Portlaoise.<\/p>\n

It is then expected that he will be remanded in custody at that jail, a maximum-security prison, until his trial next year. <\/p>\n

The authorities in Ireland and the UAE issued a joint statement, welcoming the extradition. <\/p>\n

Kinahan, who is named in the statement only as \u201can Irish national,\u201d is described as \u201cone of the most high-profile individuals sought for prosecution in connection with transnational organised crime and is accused of directing an organised crime organisation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Minister for Justice Jim O\u2019Callaghan<\/a> said: \u201cI would like to express Ireland\u2019s deep appreciation for the support of the United Arab Emirates in handling the extradition request, and commend the professionalism, efficiency, and diligence demonstrated by the UAE judicial authorities throughout the extradition proceedings. This decision is another landmark of judicial cooperation between the two countries and reflects the strength of our partnership to address transnational organised crime.\u201d<\/p>\n

H.E. Abdullah bin Sultan bin Awad Al Nuaimi, the Minister of Justice of the United Arab Emirates, said he reaffirmed the UAE\u2019s \u201ccommitment to further strengthening judicial cooperation with Irish authorities, and continuing to enhance our judicial partnerships with the international community.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis achievement reflects the UAE\u2019s position as a trusted international partner in the field of international judicial cooperation and underscores the steadfast commitment we have to supporting global efforts to combat transnational organised crime, bring perpetrators of serious crimes to justice, and prevent them from evading accountability, thereby contributing to regional and international security and stability, and reinforcing the rule of law,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

On Sunday, Taoiseach Miche\u00e1l Martin<\/a> paid \u201ca very strong tribute\u201d to An Garda S\u00edochana, the Garda Commissioner and successive Ministers of Justice, in terms of the Garda\u2019s success in tackling organised crime \u201cin a very effective way.\u201d<\/p>\n

Speaking at Tullamore Show where he was asked for his response to the Daniel Kinihan extradition, Martin said he could not comment on any individual case, but said the Garda deserved \u201creal credit\u201d for their consistent, determined focus on organised crime more generally.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd also I pay tribute to the authorities in the United Arab Emirates for the strong cooperation with Ireland over recent years in this field more generally. Ireland has worked hard to develop strong partnerships at a global level, because international criminal activity is global, and the connections are global, so global partnerships are essential,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The Taoiseach added: \u201cWe have dealt with threats to the State in the past, very serious threats over a long period of time, and our garda\u00ed and security forces were resilient in the face of those threats.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd likewise, in terms of the threats of modern gangland crime and the international dimension of that, we have strengthened our capacities, we strengthened our laws, and our capacities to undermine such activity.\u201d<\/p>\n
