As\u00a0Spider-Man: Brand New Day\u00a0enters its second weekend, one of its actors is glad to be back in action<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Michael Mando first entered the MCU as Mac Gargan in 2017\u2019s\u00a0Spider-Man: Homecoming. Despite a post-credits scene teeing him up, it wasn\u2019t until this new movie that Gargan returned, now working as the supervillain Scorpion. For anyone thinking it was about time, Mando told the Hollywood Reporter<\/a> it was something he tried to put out of his head. While he was busy playing Nacho in\u00a0Better Call Saul,\u00a0he \u201cdidn\u2019t try to predict my destiny in any way. I trusted that things will come around when they do, if they do.\u201d<\/p>\n

In Mando\u2019s words, he had two creative meetings about Scorpion\u2019s returning in\u00a0Brand New Day, and met director Daniel Destin Cretton at the second. Within minutes of talking about the character, he understood Cretton as a \u201creal visionary\u201d and wanted to work with him. Cagey about their conversations, Mando instead talked up his clash with Spider-Man while being controlled by Sadie Sink\u2019s Jean Grey<\/a>. To him, that fight\u2019s about \u201cseeing Peter lose his hero status,\u201d and ends with a victory for Gargan.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know you\u2019ve got to convincingly lose the fight, but psychologically win the battle. As an actor, that was such an interesting tightrope to maneuver,\u201d said Mando. That Gargan was Jean\u2019s puppet let him form a connection between his and Sadie Sink\u2019s characters. \u201cI\u2019ve always imagined Mac has gone through a deep tragedy and sees [Damage Control] as corrupt. He and Jean have a lot in common, and it was interesting to find the nuances of their inner worlds.\u201d<\/p>\n

Absent from the rest of Brand New Day\u00a0after Peter beats him, Gargan has \u201cenormous potential growth,\u201d teased Mando. This film is just \u201clevel one\u201d for his character, and he specifically brought up his \u201cultimate form\u201d being Venom. He\u2019s not saying any more than that, but like Tom Holland, he seems to be aware of Sony and Marvel\u2019s future plans and is definitely here for it.<\/p>\n
