{"id":629045,"date":"2026-08-09T19:38:23","date_gmt":"2026-08-09T19:38:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/629045\/"},"modified":"2026-08-09T19:38:23","modified_gmt":"2026-08-09T19:38:23","slug":"tullamore-show-more-than-70000-flock-to-agricultural-spectacular-as-it-celebrates-35-years-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/629045\/","title":{"rendered":"Tullamore Show: More than 70,000 flock to agricultural spectacular as it celebrates 35 years \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Generational renewal within Irish agriculture, and the vital role of succession planning, was a key theme of this year\u2019s Tullamore Show \u2013 appropriate, considering the show is hosted on the Butterfield Estate, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/offaly\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/offaly\">Co Offaly<\/a>, which has been successfully passed on from stalwart Johnny Butterfield to his daughter Anne Marie and her husband Stephen McQuade. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Tullamore Show is the country\u2019s largest one-day agricultural show, with an attendance of more than 70,000. It celebrated 35 years on Sunday with an increased prize fund of \u20ac180,000 and more commercial stands than ever.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Although he has officially retired from farming, Butterfield is still a big figure at Tullamore Show where he led the Mountbolus Pipe Band as a drummer in the opening parade. He wore his Civil Defence tie and a long-service medal. \u201cI love being here every year. It\u2019s a great privilege,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Butterfield and the family came in for praise from show chairman John Keena, who pointed out that four weeks ago \u201cthis was a greenfield site and a working farm and I want to thank the landowners for allowing its use\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Keena was also thankful that the crowds came early this year with people travelling from all over Ireland. Photograph: Tom Honan <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">There was also a focus on the role of women in agriculture and volunteerism within the farming industry, with many members of Offaly Volunteer Group assisting in crowd control and parking.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Among the 740 commercial stands were the sustainable livestock village and farm safety seminars.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">There were also fashion shows and gardening and cookery demonstrations, a flower show, sheepshearing demonstrations, the Macra National Farm Skills competition, dog agility competitions, rare breeds, show jumping and robotics.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Tadhg Devanney prepares his Belgian blue heifer, called Magpie, at the Tullamore Show. MEP <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/barry-cowen\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/barry-cowen\">Barry Cowen<\/a> and TD Tony McCormack were there, too. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Martin described the show as \u201cthe largest one-day show in Europe\u201d, which went down very well with the locals. \u201cIt personifies the very highest standards in Irish agricultural industry and food production and in rural life as well,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He was impressed with the variety and range of the stalls, which, he said illustrated the \u201cvery significant role\u201d that Irish agriculture and food production played in the Irish economy and more generally in terms of core global issues of food security.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Poignantly, en route to Tullamore Show, the national flag was flying at half-mast on Charleville Castle, part of Charleville Demesne where Tullamore Show was held for many years.
