{"id":629964,"date":"2026-08-10T10:29:14","date_gmt":"2026-08-10T10:29:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/629964\/"},"modified":"2026-08-10T10:29:14","modified_gmt":"2026-08-10T10:29:14","slug":"uffizi-galleries-in-florence-announce-unprecedented-e50m-revamp-the-art-newspaper","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/629964\/","title":{"rendered":"Uffizi Galleries in Florence announce \u2018unprecedented\u2019 \u20ac50m revamp &#8211; The Art Newspaper"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">The Gallerie degli Uffizi (Uffizi Galleries) in Florence have announced a sweeping \u20ac50m revamp of their museums and gardens, describing the size and breadth of the measure as \u201cwithout precedent\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">Updates such as the installation of new lighting systems, the creation of new exhibition space, the redesign of museum displays and accessibility improvements will be carried out across the complex, including at the Uffizi Gallery, the Palazzo Pitti across the Arno and the Boboli Gardens, an 11-acre space outside the Pitti designed in the 16th century for Florence\u2019s Medici rulers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">Labels and signs will be updated at the Uffizi and Palazzo Pitti, while new equipment including air-handling systems\u2014which help to regulate the indoor climate\u2014will be installed to improve the conservation of works. The changes will \u201cradically transform the face\u201d of Italy\u2019s most visited art museum, its management promises. The entire programme is expected to be completed within two years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">\u201cThanks to this series of unprecedented interventions, of extraordinary scope and depth, the Uffizi will present an even better image to the world than it does today,\u201d Simone Verde, director of the Uffizi Galleries, said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">Half of the overall budget is covered by ticket sales while the other half will come from culture ministry funds earmarked for major redevelopments, a spokesperson for Verde tells The Art Newspaper. The various projects were initiated or planned immediately after Verde&#8217;s administration took office in 2024, though some had been identified as necessary long before, the spokesman added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">Some of the announced projects have already been completed, such as the restoration of the rooms of the Flemish Masters, three frescoed spaces in the Uffizi Gallery which reopened in July 2024 following a restoration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">\u201cThey have been announced only now, out of a sense of seriousness, to avoid triumphalist communications before concrete results had been achieved,\u201d the spokesperson said of the decision to include completed projects in the announcement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">Planned or ongoing work at the Uffizi as part of the revamp includes the creation of a new introductory exhibition space dedicated to the history of the collection, which will cost \u20ac2.4m. At the Palazzo Pitti, the \u201cPiano degli Occhi\u201d, a 1,000 sq. m. space on the last floor of the palace, which is currently largely unknown, will be turned into a new exhibition area for \u20ac4.9m. The Fountain of Neptune, surrounded by an artificial lake, will also be restored.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">The Uffizi Galleries has unveiled major overhauls before.
