Since then, the fungus has spread to 27 states, becoming a growing concern for hospitals and health care facilities across the country.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">According to the CDC, last year, the <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fxw_earth-space_article_main-content_article-body_2_5\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/us-regions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">U.S.<\/a> reported more than 4,200 confirmed clinical cases of\u00a0C. auris. Health officials say the country is already on track to surpass that number in 2026, with more than 3,400 confirmed cases reported through July.<\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"668\" height=\"376\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/gettyimages-1219040587-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/> <\/p>\n<p class=\"title\">Candida auris is a yeast responsible for many infections.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"sub-text\"><strong> (BSIP\/Education Images\/Universal Images Group via Getty Images \/ Getty Images)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\"><a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fxw_earth-space_article_main-content_article-body_2_6\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/california\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">California<\/a> has reported the highest number of cases so far, followed by <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fxw_earth-space_article_main-content_article-body_2_7\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/texas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Texas<\/a> and <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fxw_earth-space_article_main-content_article-body_2_8\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/tennessee\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Tennessee<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">C. auris\u00a0is a type of yeast that can cause serious infections, especially in people who are already sick or have weakened immune systems. Unlike many other infections, some strains of\u00a0C. auris\u00a0are resistant to common antifungal medications, making treatment more difficult.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">The fungus was first detected in 1996 by Korean researchers, but it was formally identified as a new species in 2009 after <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fxw_earth-space_article_main-content_article-body_2_9\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/asia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Japanese <\/a>scientists discovered it in a patient\u2019s ear infection.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\"><a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fxw_earth-space_article_main-content_article-body_2_10\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/earth-space\/toxic-algae-bloom-deadly-sea-lions-dolphins\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><strong>TOXIC ALGAE BLOOM BECOMING DEADLY FOR SEA LIONS, DOLPHINS IN PACIFIC OCEAN<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">According to the Cleveland Clinic, the fungus can cause infections in wounds, urinary tract and ears. Possible symptoms include fever, chills, low blood pressure, rapid heart rate, fatigue, and symptoms related to where the infection occurs.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">The biggest concern for healthcare officials is how easily\u00a0C. auris\u00a0can spread. The fungus can be passed through contact with an infected person, even if they do not show symptoms, or through contaminated surfaces and medical equipment.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">In hospitals or nursing homes,\u00a0C. auris\u00a0can spread through shared equipment or by contact with surfaces where the fungus can survive for long periods of time.
