{"id":631227,"date":"2026-08-11T07:18:27","date_gmt":"2026-08-11T07:18:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/631227\/"},"modified":"2026-08-11T07:18:27","modified_gmt":"2026-08-11T07:18:27","slug":"crowds-line-the-streets-of-cork-to-welcome-all-ireland-camogie-champions-home-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/631227\/","title":{"rendered":"Crowds line the streets of Cork to welcome All-Ireland camogie champions home \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">What a difference a year makes. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Twelve months on from a heartbreaking one point to defeat to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/galway\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/galway\">Galway<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/gaa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/gaa\">All-Ireland Final<\/a>, the Cork <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/camogie\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/camogie\">camogie<\/a> team returned to a heroine\u2019s welcome on Leeside with the O\u2019Duffy Cup after they defeated the Tribeswomen by an equally tight margin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The crowds had been gathering from around 5pm on the Grand Parade in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/cork\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/cork\">Cork<\/a> city centre with Ken Perrott from Cork\u2019s 96FM Street Fleet keeping the spirits up, blasting out some of Cork\u2019s anthems including Kingfishr\u2019s Killeagh and the Franka and Walters\u2019 After All.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">By the time the team bus arrived at 6.45pm to the sound of Tina Turner\u2019s Simply the Best, and team captain M\u00e9abh Cahalane led her team-mates on to the stage near the National Monument, the crowd ranging from small children to pensioners could hardly contain its excitement.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"The Cork camogie team celebrate with the O&#x2019;Duffy Cup during their homecoming in the city centre on Monday night. Photograph: Tom Maher\/Inpho <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Cork 96FM\u2019s GAA reporter and MC for the night Finbarr McCarthy said he had seen some amazing welcomes for Cork camogie teams in the past, but he had never seen such a fantastic turnout.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Lord Mayor of Cork Damian Boylan said he had gone to Croke Park on Sunday \u201cbelieving these ladies would deliver, and by God, did they deliver\u201d as he went on to pay tribute to the team for \u201ctheir sacrifice and resilience\u201d, as they saw off Galway to win by 2-14 to 0-19.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mayor of Cork County Bernard Moynihan said it was a great honour to be in Croke Park to see them win Cork\u2019s 31st All-Ireland senior camogie title, noting that while people can \u201cbuy cars and houses, you can\u2019t buy an All-Ireland medal\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/sport\/gaelic-games\/2026\/08\/09\/cork-edge-out-galway-in-gripping-camogie-final-on-history-making-day\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cork edge out Galway in gripping camogie final on history-making dayOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Taoiseach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/micheal-martin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/micheal-martin\">Mich\u00e9al Martin<\/a> also congratulated the team, speaking first as Gaeilge, praising the team for their determination, energy and power as he proceeded to tell the players how proud the people of Cork were of them after winning such a fine game of camogie with no little skill.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIt\u2019s a tremendous pleasure to be here to welcome home a great Cork camogie team &#8230; we thank the players in particularly for all they have done and we pay tribute to your captain Maeve Cahalane for the leadership she has shown on and off the field &#8230; Corcaigh ab\u00fa le fada an lae.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">And then it was the turn of Cahalane to come to the microphone, as looking out at a forest of red flags, she introduced the entire 36 strong panel of players to the crowd, who cheered their heroines to the skies before Cahalane thanked the thousands of fans in red jerseys.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Cork's Laura Hayes and Saoirse McCarthy (centre) lead the celebrations during the homecoming.
