\n\tMaria Fernanda C\u00e2ndido<\/a>, the veteran Brazilian actor who rose to major international projection last year thanks to a key role in Kleber Mendon\u00e7a Filho\u2019s Oscar-nominated \u201cThe Secret Agent,\u201d is set to star in \u201cLost Objects,\u201d by renowned director Luiz Fernando Carvalho<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tProduction has already started on \u201cLost Objects\u201d (\u201cObjetos Perdidos\u201d), which is described as \u201ca modern dystopian fable\u201d and also stars theatre veteran Andr\u00e9 Frateschi, newcomer Marcela Vivan Russo and acclaimed French actor Maurice Durozier. The film is produced by Academia de Filmes, which is part of the INK Studios ecosystem.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tThe official synopsis for the project evokes a poetic image: \u201cThis love story is an urban fable; the streets and tunnels would be empty. At the street corners, traffic lights would turn on and off without any meaning. It\u2019s an empty planet, some would say. In a time yet to be named, when the couple\u2019s love crumbled in the dead of night during a blackout, the planet became populated once more. To each other, had they been nothing more than figments of the imagination? Would they ever see each other again? That man and that woman now wander through fragments of the real world, seeking to piece their lives back together after the overwhelming experience of passion.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSpeaking with Variety, Carvalho describes the film as \u201cchemical fiction,\u201d saying it is a \u201cmodern fable about love, this substance that seems to be disappearing from planet Earth.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cAs for the film\u2019s genre, I call it \u2018chemical fiction,\u2019 a sort of dialogue with science fiction,\u201d he adds. \u201cAfter all, love is such a powerful force in our lives that we can hardly say for sure whether that encounter really happened or if it was the result of the magical chemistry that fuels our amorous imagination.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cLost Objects\u201d comes three years after C\u00e2ndido and Carvalho collaborated in \u201cThe Passion According to G.H.,\u201d\u00a0 an adaptation of the eponymous novel by Clarice Lispector<\/a>.\u00a0 The film, which premiered to acclaim in Rotterdam, went on to have a successful festival run. Speaking with Variety, C\u00e2ndido says the two films will work as a \u201cdyptich.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201c\u2018Lost Objects\u2019 is an enchanted fable, a film that inhabits a space of wonder and enchantment,\u201d C\u00e2ndido says. \u201cIt forms a diptych with \u2018The Passion According to G.H.,\u2019 which was my most radical artistic journey \u2014 bringing me into the world of one of the great works of Brazilian literature, by Clarice Lispector. I made that journey hand in hand with Luiz Fernando Carvalho. Twenty-four years into our creative partnership, to embark on this new journey together is a profound joy and a privilege.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tC\u00e2ndido is due to receive the prestigious Kikito de Cristal (Crystal Kikito) at this year\u2019s Gramado Film Festival<\/a>, taking place in the Brazilian southern town over August 12-22. The award is bestowed upon artists with standout trajectories in Brazilian and international cinema, and crowns C\u00e2ndido\u2019s decades-long career as one of the country\u2019s most well-respected performers. This year marks the first time Gramado will hand out two Crystal Kikitos, with \u201cI\u2019m Still Here\u201d star Selton Mello joining C\u00e2ndido as an honoree. The selection marks a recognition of Brazil<\/a>\u2019s current international momentum, with C\u00e2ndido also having starred in other major foreign productions such as \u201cFantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore\u201d and Marco Bellocchio\u2019s \u201cThe Traitor.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tCarvalho is one of Brazil\u2019s most experienced filmmakers, having worked to great acclaim both in film and television in projects such as \u201cTo the Left of the Father\u201d (\u201cLavoura arcaica\u201d), \u201cTwo Brothers\u201d (\u201cDois Irm\u00e3os\u201d), \u201cCapitu\u201d and \u201cThe Kingdom\u2019s Stone\u201d (\u201cA Pedra do Reino\u201d). The director is known for his intricate literary adaptations and is responsible for bringing an inventive, elaborate visual language often dedicated exclusively to films to television, with his successful 2005 miniseries \u201cToday Is Maria\u2019s Day\u201d standing out as one of the country\u2019s great small screen offerings.\u00a0<\/p>\n
