JADE<\/a> has opened up about Jesy Nelson<\/a>\u2018s departure from Little Mix<\/a>, calling it \u201cincredibly painful\u201d.<\/p>\n

Nelson originally left Little Mix in 2020<\/a>, saying the pressure of being in the band had \u201ctaken a toll\u201d on her mental health.<\/p>\n

Though the girl group continued as a trio after her absence, they announced they were taking a \u201clittle break\u201d<\/a>\u00a0to focus on each member\u2019s respective solo projects once their \u2018Confetti\u2019 tour ended in 2022.<\/p>\n

Now, JADE has reflected on Nelson leaving the group in an interview with The Guardian<\/a>, saying: \u201cIt was incredibly painful. For all of us, that was the worst part, and it\u2019s taken a lot of understanding and therapy and all those things to work out how that can happen when you\u2019ve devoted so much time and love to someone.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy biggest wish for that whole period is that it was handled differently. I just would\u2019ve loved us to all sit and chat about it,\u201d she continued.<\/p>\n

Nelson has previously discussed how badly her mental health was impacted by her celebrity profile while in the group. She once explained how\u00a0one tweet from Katy Hopkins about her weight affected her so badly it led her to attempt suicide.<\/a>\u00a0Hopkins posted the tweet when Little Mix returned to\u00a0The X Factor\u00a0for a guest performance in 2013.<\/p>\n

Jade went on to say: \u201cWe absolutely adored Jesy like family \u2013 it wasn\u2019t just work,\u201d adding: \u201cWe all wanted to protect her, because we understood that trauma there and what she\u2019d been through. I think we handled it as best as we could. All of a sudden, we were a member short in the middle of album promo, with everyone asking what was going on.<\/p>\n

\u201cObviously we don\u2019t speak any more, and things happened that I don\u2019t think should have, but I still do feel an element of protection towards Jesy,\u201d she added. \u201cNobody fully understands how complex the whole thing was \u2013 it wasn\u2019t just a case of someone wanting to leave. Numerous things built up in the last year and in the back of my mind I knew it was going to happen. I\u2019d just like for it to have happened in a \u2026 better way.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not the first time a Little Mix member has acknowledged Nelson\u2019s departure. Last year, Perrie Edwards<\/a> began teasing a song about a past friendship<\/a>, and later discussed her relationship with her former bandmate<\/a>, saying they \u201cdon\u2019t talk, and haven\u2019t done for a long time.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s really sad, it\u2019s heartbreaking,\u201d she added. \u201cBut sometimes these things happen and people decide they want to part ways, and that\u2019s absolutely fine. I would rather it went differently, but you can\u2019t control how things go.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Leigh-Anne Pinnock<\/a> has previously admitted\u00a0Little Mix needed therapy after Nelson\u2019s \u201ctraumatic\u201d departure<\/a>, recalling: \u201cThe whole thing was abrupt and sad and then it was messy.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were a family, the four of us were like sisters, and we had been that way since we were teenagers, so it\u2019s not an over-exaggeration to say that losing a member was a traumatic experience.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you have felt so much love and support with another person over such a long time and then that suddenly disappears you never fully get to understand why it hurts.\u201d<\/p>\n

Last year, a producer for the group alleged that Nelson\u2019s vocals were sung by an impersonator for one of their last songs<\/a> as a quartet, as she was \u201cover it\u201d.<\/p>\n

Nelson released her first solo single, \u2018Boyz\u2019, featuring Nicki Minaj<\/a>, in 2021, followed by \u2018Bad Thing\u2019 in 2023. She recently gave birth to \u201chealthy and fighting strong\u201d twin daughters<\/a>, Ocean Jade and Story Monroe Nelson-Foster.<\/p>\n

In the same interview, JADE criticised\u00a0The 1975<\/a>\u2019s\u00a0Matty Healy<\/a>\u00a0for avoiding politics at\u00a0Glastonbury 2025<\/a>, saying \u201cI don\u2019t think you can be a pop artist and cover your eyes\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n

JADE made headlines of her own at Glastonbury this year<\/a>, playing the Woodsies Stage on Saturday and being introduced by\u00a0Doctor Who<\/a>\u00a0actor Ncuti Gatwa. During the set, she led the crowd in chants of \u201cfuck you\u201d to a range of targets, including Reform UK, \u201cwelfare cuts, transphobia, silencing protest, selling arms and justifying genocide\u201d.<\/p>\n

NME\u00a0also caught up with her backstage at Worthy Farm<\/a>. \u201cI still feel like I\u2019m having an out-of-body experience after my performance. I\u2019ve not come down from it yet,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019ve always dreamed of doing Glastonbury, and to be here with my own music is great. It\u2019s nice to know that the writing I\u2019ve been doing for myself is what got me here.\u201d<\/p>\n

She releases her debut solo album \u2018THAT\u2019S SHOWBIZ BABY!\u201d on September 12<\/a>, with special appearances from\u00a0RAYE<\/a>, Mike Sabath, Lostboy, Cirkut and Pablo Bowman.<\/p>\n
