Meanwhile, it charts all 12 of its tracks in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/charts\/hot-100\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Billboard Hot 100<\/a>\u2018s top 40, while notching two songs in the top five: chart-topping lead single \u201cHate That I Made You Love Me\u201d (No. 2) and the new title track (No. 4), whose video has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/music\/music-news\/ariana-grande-loves-petal-music-video-after-controversy-1236309562\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">heated a discourse<\/a> about the pop star\u2019s physical appearance that has at times threatened to overwhelm the album\u2019s debut week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tHow do those Petal numbers compare with our expectations? And will the album era ultimately stand strong on its own? Billboard staffers discuss these questions and more below. <\/p>\n<p>\t\t<strong>1.\u00a0Ariana\u00a0Grande\u2019s\u00a0Petal\u00a0enters atop the Billboard 200 with 295,000 first-week units \u2014 her best single-week performance since\u00a0Thank U, Next\u00a0in 2019. Is that performance better, worse, or about what you expected from it?<\/strong>\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>Katie Atkinson:<\/strong>\u00a0I don\u2019t know why I would underestimate\u00a0Ariana\u00a0Grande at this point in her career, but I think this first week is better than I expected. If you look at the pace of her past two-plus years \u2013\u00a0Eternal Sunshine\u00a0in March 2024,\u00a0Wicked\u00a0in November 2024,\u00a0Eternal Sunshine 2\u00a0in March 2025,\u00a0Wicked 2\u00a0in November 2025 \u2013 it would be easy for an artist to feel overexposed. But then she came back with a new tour and new album this year, and it turns out there was an even bigger appetite for both. You can understand why she would want (and deserves) to step back from the public eye for a minute, and she\u2019s going out on an incredible high.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>Kyle Denis<\/strong>: This is around what I expected. I did think she\u2019d be able to break the 300k mark this time around\u00a0(given the variety of vinyl pressings that were introduced over the past two months), but I wouldn\u2019t be surprised if some listeners were temporarily turned off by the conversation around her spiraling out of control.\u00a0Considering the darker, more subdued sound of this album \u2014 as well as her confrontational lyricism \u2014\u00a0Petal\u00a0earning\u00a0Grande\u00a0her biggest single-week\u00a0album\u00a0performance\u00a0in over seven years is an indisputable win.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>Lyndsey Havens<\/strong>: Better. I would always bet on Ari to secure a No. 1 on the Billboard 200 \u2014 in fact, the only solo studio full-length to miss the top spot was\u00a0Dangerous Woman, which debuted at No. 2 \u2014 and I think since her last album, impressively, interest has only grown. Plus, once you factor in that she called this new album \u201cferal\u201d and made clear she would be talking her s\u2014t, I think that managed to hook her detractors, too, if for nothing more than a curiosity listen.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>Alicia Urrea<\/strong>: I\u2019d say it\u2019s about what I expected, but definitely on the stronger side! Grande is still one of the biggest pop stars in the world, so I personally didn\u2019t doubt a No. 1 debut, but 295,000 units is a particularly massive showing when you consider that the last album of hers to do such strong numbers was\u00a0Thank U, Next\u00a0in 2019. I wouldn\u2019t necessarily say I expected the equivalent 360,000-unit debut, which was such a huge moment for her, but coming in at 295,000 feels like such a big reflection of how much staying power she still has.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>Andrew Unterberger<\/strong>: It\u2019s definitely a little stronger than I expected, but more I\u2019m just a little surprised in retrospect that her last two albums weren\u2019t closer to this unit range. What the hell was Positions doing with a sub-200k first week? She was coming off Thank U, Next!<\/p>\n<p>\t\t<strong>2. What do you think is the biggest reason for\u00a0Petal\u2019s superior first-week performance to Grande\u2019s last two albums, 2024\u2019s\u00a0Eternal Sunshine\u00a0(227k) and 2020\u2019s\u00a0Positions\u00a0(174k)?<\/strong>\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>Katie Atkinson:<\/strong>\u00a0It seems that album sales are the most important factor, including Ari\u2019s biggest-ever week on vinyl. There were a lot of different variants here, as is the norm with an artist of her status, but you can release countless different CDs and records of every color in the rainbow and you\u2019ll still need to have a fanbase who wants to buy them \u2014 and she had that in spades. As for promo, I think the Eternal Sunshine Tour that kicked off nearly two months before this album came out was probably the best possible awareness campaign, because Grande was regularly making headlines without doing any interviews or TV appearances.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>Kyle Denis<\/strong>: Let\u2019s\u00a0start with\u00a0Positions. First off,\u00a0Petal\u00a0had the advantage simply by arriving in a year that\u00a0wasn\u2019t\u00a02020. On a more serious note,\u00a0I\u2019d\u00a0bet\u00a0Petal\u00a0benefited\u00a0from its two-month pre-order\u00a0window, while\u00a0Positions\u00a0likely suffered\u00a0from the four weeks between the arrival of its lead single and the set\u2019s full release.\u00a0It also helps that, generally,\u00a0Petal\u00a0is more pop-forward than\u00a0Positions, which matters when your main buyers are a notoriously fickle fanbase.\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>Now onto\u00a0Eternal Sunshine. 227,000 first-week units is nothing to scoff at, but\u00a0Eternal Sunshine\u00a0pulled those numbers amid arguably Grande\u2019s worst hate train (remember: this was\u00a0around when news of her Ethan Slater\u2019s relationship first broke) and off the back of a lead single (\u201cYes,\u00a0And?\u201d) that came and went with a relative whisper despite reaching No. 1 on the Hot 100. In comparison, Grande has pretty good press leading into\u00a0Petal\u2019s\u00a0release weekend (the title tack\u2019s music video is what really derailed the conversation) and \u201cHate That I Made You Love Me\u201d\u00a0(10)\u00a0has now spent more weeks in the Hot 100\u2019s top 10 than\u00a0\u201cYes, And?\u201d (three) and \u201cWe Can\u2019t Be Friends\u201d (six) combined.\u00a0And, of course, a more somber divorce album was always going to be a tougher commercial\u00a0sell.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>Lyndsey Havens<\/strong>: She\u2019s back on freaking tour! If you look back on\u00a0Ariana\u2019s output since her 2013 debut, she has never really gone away. The longest gap between albums is four years, and that was during a pandemic. But in the past few years, she has been more present than ever, with her own music and\u00a0Wicked\u00a0and her upcoming\u00a0Focker-In-Law\u00a0film \u2014 and, of course, being on tour. She\u2019s stayed top of mind for so long, and gave\u00a0petal\u00a0a lengthy, somewhat old-school rollout, that interest had strategically peaked just in time for its release.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>Alicia Urrea<\/strong>: I think the biggest thing is the amount of steam Grande has built and maintained since\u00a0Eternal Sunshine. Between Wicked, her return to the stage and the fact that this is her first major tour in years, she\u2019s had a much bigger presence in pop culture heading into\u00a0Petal. The album was also released at a point where fans had been waiting for new music from Grande while actively following her again, so there was a lot of pent-up demand. I think the\u00a0Eternal Sunshine\u00a0tour also amplified the idea that fans aren\u2019t just listening to\u00a0Petal, they\u2019re getting to experience this new era in real time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>Andrew Unterberger<\/strong>: It feels like folks are starting to properly venerate her as a true albums artist. Weird to say about someone who\u2019s been putting out classic LPs basically for a decade now, but it takes a long time as a pop star to divorce yourself from the perception of being primarily a radio hitmaker and establish you\u2019re someone who fans should be plopping down $$$ for to support their full-length projects. Based on these first-week numbers \u2014\u00a0168,000 in sales, including 96,000 in vinyl alone \u2014\u00a0it seems like she\u2019s gotten there. (And a wide array of available variants also helps a good amount there, of course.) <\/p>\n<p>\t\t<strong>3. Advance single \u201cHate That I Made You Love Me\u201d is still the best-performing song from the set, returning to No. 2 on the Hot 100 this week and holding strong in the top 10 since its debut at No. 1 two months ago. Does the song feel to you like it\u2019s becoming one of her classic singles at this point?<\/strong>\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>Katie Atkinson:<\/strong>\u00a0It does! And to me, it almost feels like a sequel to the biggest hit from\u00a0Eternal Sunshine, fellow Hot 100 No. 1 \u201cWe Can\u2019t Be Friends (Wait for Your Love).\u201d There are a lot of theories that both songs are at least partly about Grande\u2019s relationship to her fans or to the public in general, but while \u201cFriends\u201d takes the sweet route (\u201cI\u2019ll wait for your love\u201d), \u201cHate\u201d doesn\u2019t mince words (\u201cHate that I made you love me, \u2019cause I barely tried\u201d). It\u2019s very compelling to think of\u00a0Ariana\u00a0addressing the same topic from two different lenses and tones, and that only gives her newest lead single more depth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>Kyle Denis<\/strong>: Yes, and\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0glad to say I called it from the jump. Her steely, slightly disillusioned delivery on the\u00a0track\u00a0is irresistible,\u00a0and Grande is one of the best melodicists in pop\u00a0at the moment.\u00a0When\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0all said and\u00a0done\u00a0\u2014 yes, I\u2019m aware there are several years left in this decade \u2014\u00a0\u201cHate\u201d will go down alongside\u00a0\u201cWe Can\u2019t Be Friends\u201d as Grande\u2019s\u00a02020s-defining solo hits.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>Lyndsey Havens<\/strong>: Totally, because like most classic\u00a0Ariana\u00a0singles it\u2019s a conversation starter. Think of previous top-charting album singles like \u2018Thank U, Next,\u201d or \u201cYes, And?\u201d and you can probably recall the cultural conversation surrounding\u00a0Ariana\u00a0at that point in time. \u201cHate That I Made You Love Me\u201d accomplishes this as well, placing\u00a0Ariana\u00a0in direct dialogue with an audience that could love her or could hate her \u2014 or may love to hate her \u2014 all while making clear she\u2019s good either way.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>Alicia Urrea<\/strong>: In my opinion, it\u2019s a bit too early to officially call it a classic, but it\u2019s certainly starting to look like one. What stands out to me is that \u201cHate That I Made You Love Me\u201d hasn\u2019t traditionally behaved like a song that benefitted from the initial hype from an album\u2019s announcement or release. The track has continued to hold in the top 10 and has now climbed back up to No. 2. That kind of stamina makes me think it has a real shot at becoming one of those Grande singles that is definitive to its era and sticks around beyond the album cycle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>Andrew Unterberger<\/strong>: Absolutely. I can\u2019t remember another hit song in recent years that\u2019s married such irresistible pop hooks with such fascinatingly off-kilter production and such spiteful lyrics \u2014\u00a0and somehow made the chilly blend still feel warm and inviting. It\u2019s one of Grande\u2019s greatest single-song accomplishments, no question, and a deserved top 10 fixture on the Hot 100 this summer. <\/p>\n<p>\t\t<strong>4. \u201cPetal\u201d is the best-performing of the new songs, debuting at No. 4 as the album\u2019s second single. Does it seem like a long-lasting hit to you, or will it fade a little quicker than \u201cHate\u201d following its debut?<\/strong>\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>Katie Atkinson:<\/strong>\u00a0I think \u201cHate That I Made You Love Me\u201d will have a longer life than \u201cPetal,\u201d but when it comes to their horror-inspired music videos, \u201cPetal\u201d is the one I won\u2019t soon forget. The blood-soaked finale was so unexpected and visceral, and definitely drives home the song\u2019s message of the unbearable expectations placed on a music star.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>Kyle Denis<\/strong>: It\u2019s\u00a0still my favorite song on the album, but I think\u00a0it\u2019ll\u00a0fade a little quicker than \u201cHate.\u201d Excellent music video, but\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0sure the (slightly) unconventional (for\u00a0Ariana) sound and oscillating time signatures might stump some radio programmers and casual listeners.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>Lyndsey Havens<\/strong>: It definitely feels like a long-lasting hit based on quality alone \u2014 especially its catchy, melodic yet jittery chorus. But once you factor in (again) the conversation surrounding this song, both the intentional and unintentional ones, as well as the fact that the song has quickly become a meme \u2014 with fans sharing various items found in between cracks of pavement \u2014 I think \u201cPetal\u201d surely has all the ingredients to of a song made to stick around.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>Alicia Urrea<\/strong>: I believe \u201cPetal\u201d has the potential to be an everlasting hit, but I\u2019d expect \u201cHate That I Made You Love Me\u201d to remain the bigger song of the\u00a0Petal\u00a0era. A No. 4 debut is a strong starting point, and as the title track, \u201cPetal\u201d has an advantage in keeping itself tied to the album and its overall\u00a0aesthetic. However, \u201cHate\u201d has already had two months to establish itself and has shown that it can maintain major chart success, so I\u2019d be surprised if \u201cPetal\u201d had the same endurance. I could see it becoming a solid, recognizable Grande hit without necessarily becoming the defining single of the album\u2019s identity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>Andrew Unterberger<\/strong>: It\u2019s sorta hard to tell for me so far, to be honest; I like the song and I certainly find it an interesting release at this point in her career, but it hasn\u2019t stayed with me in the same way that \u201cHate\u201d has. Maybe I just need to get a little more sick of that song \u2014 or hear this new one out in the wild a couple times, divorced from larger context \u2014\u00a0before I can make a proper judgment here. <\/p>\n<p>\t\t<strong>5. Obviously social media debate over the \u201cPetal\u201d video and Grande\u2019s current physical appearance in general came to overwhelm the album\u2019s release week somewhat \u2014 do you think\u00a0Petal\u00a0will eventually get out from under that discourse and become another great\u00a0Ariana\u00a0Grande album era, or will it always be a little bit stuck in that discussion\u2019s shadow?<\/strong>\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>Katie Atkinson:<\/strong>\u00a0I think this moment in Ari\u2019s career will likely be attached to how people remember\u00a0Petal\u00a0\u2013 just like we associate\u00a0Sweetener\u00a0with the whirlwind Pete romance and\u00a0Thank U, Next\u00a0with the whirlwind Pete breakup \u2013 but I don\u2019t think it will define the legacy of the music itself.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>Kyle Denis<\/strong>: Yes. Grande\u2019s albums always do.\u00a0Sweetener\u2019s acclaim outlasted the album\u2019s traumatic circumstances, and\u00a0Positions\u00a0remains\u00a0a fan-favorite despite the way fanbase in-fighting contributed to that era getting cut short. With some time and distance, people will recognize\u00a0Petal\u00a0for the admirable artistic evolution and strikingly honest snapshot of a\u00a0contemporary\u00a0pop\u00a0icon\u2019s\u00a0psyche that it is.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>Lyndsey Havens<\/strong>: I think albums, especially ones from\u00a0Ariana, are such snapshots of her life at that moment in time. And yes, while many pop stars at her level live their lives just as openly,\u00a0Ariana\u00a0is able to release albums at such a quick pace that they often arrive before or just as that particular chapter of her story is ending. I think the former is true of\u00a0Petal, which is why the album might feel overwhelmed by the chatter surrounding it \u2014 because the album\u2019s release and heated conversations over exactly what she\u2019s singing about on it are happening in parallel. I don\u2019t think that\u2019s necessarily a negative or something the album needs to get out from under; I think it\u2019s something that the audience needs to embrace \u2014 just as\u00a0Ariana\u00a0has always done herself.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>Alicia Urrea<\/strong>: I do envision that it can eventually get out from under that discourse, although I don\u2019t think the conversation will disappear entirely from the history of this era. Right now, the scrutiny surrounding Grande\u2019s appearance is so loud that it can sometimes feel like it\u2019s overshadowing the music, but that doesn\u2019t necessarily mean it will define how\u00a0Petal\u00a0is remembered long-term. If the songs continue to perform, if more singles develop their own lives and if Grande continues performing these new tracks on tour, I think the music will speak for itself and gradually become the bigger story. Years from now, I suspect people will remember the controversy as part of the\u00a0Petal\u00a0period, without necessarily viewing it as what the era was about.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>Andrew Unterberger<\/strong>: It\u2019ll probably be tell for another decade or two exactly what the legacy of this album is, and while I hope it\u2019s able to eclipse the moment a little, it\u2019s fair to say that the moment is too baked into the album for it to escape it entirely.
