{"id":632449,"date":"2026-08-12T02:46:13","date_gmt":"2026-08-12T02:46:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/632449\/"},"modified":"2026-08-12T02:46:13","modified_gmt":"2026-08-12T02:46:13","slug":"popular-dublin-restaurant-shut-down-over-breeding-cockroaches-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/632449\/","title":{"rendered":"Popular Dublin restaurant shut down over \u2018breeding\u2019 cockroaches \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A toilet \u201coverflowing with human waste\u201d and a \u201csignificant\u201d cockroach infestation were among the reasons food businesses were served with closure orders last month, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/food-safety-authority-of-ireland-fsai\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/food-safety-authority-of-ireland-fsai\/\">Food Safety Authority of Ireland<\/a> (FSAI) said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Officers from the authority  served 11 closure orders and two prohibition orders on food businesses in July for breaches of food safety legislation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Village Shop and Takeaway in Mountbolus, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/offaly\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/offaly\/\">Co Offaly<\/a>, was served with a closure order on July 23rd. An inspector found a manhole in the staff toilet \u201coverflowing with human waste\u201d, according to a report published by the FSAI on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThis human waste was overflowing into a room storing food contact equipment adjacent to the food preparation area,\u201d the report said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The conditions posed \u201ca grave and immediate risk to public health\u201d as they provided \u201ca direct opportunity\u201d for food to be contaminated with bacteria, the inspector wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Diwali, a popular Indian and Nepalese restaurant on South Great Georges Street in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin-2\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin-2\/\">Dublin 2<\/a>, was served with a closure order on July 27th.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The inspector found \u201cevidence of a significant cockroach infestation throughout the kitchen food preparation areas\u201d. The report said cockroaches were \u201cpresent at all stages of their life cycle\u201d and were \u201cactively breeding\u201d on the premises.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Multiple dead cockroaches were also found throughout the kitchen food preparation areas. The closure order was lifted on August 7th after sanitation measures were put in place. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">At Babylon Restaurant in Clonmel, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/tipperary\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/tipperary\/\">Co Tipperary<\/a>, a dead rodent was found \u201cbehind equipment in close proximity to food products\u201d and rodent droppings were found \u201cunder a disused dishwasher\u201d. A closure order was issued to this business on July 17th and lifted on July 31st.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/2026\/08\/09\/fsai-recalls-over-40-items-from-dunnes-stores-and-supervalu\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">FSAI recalls more than 40 items from Dunnes Stores and SuperValuOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Several other premises were issued with closure orders including a mobile unit trading as Canteen Street Food in Damastown Park, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin-15\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin-15\/\">Dublin 15<\/a>; India Dining restaurant in Prospect House, Church Street, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/wicklow\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/wicklow\/\">Wicklow<\/a>; and Roots Health Food, a stall trading at Salthill and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/monkstown\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/monkstown\/\">Monkstown<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dart\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dart\/\">Dart<\/a> station in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin\/\">Co Dublin<\/a>.
