{"id":632504,"date":"2026-08-12T03:24:17","date_gmt":"2026-08-12T03:24:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/632504\/"},"modified":"2026-08-12T03:24:17","modified_gmt":"2026-08-12T03:24:17","slug":"fourteen-cattle-die-from-dehydration-after-water-disconnected-at-coolmore-owned-farm-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/632504\/","title":{"rendered":"Fourteen cattle die from dehydration after water disconnected at Coolmore-owned farm \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Fourteen young cattle died of dehydration last week at a farm owned by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/coolmore\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/coolmore\/\">Coolmore<\/a> Stud after the animals\u2019 drinking water supply was disconnected.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The incident occurred at a farm in Brodeen, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/tipperary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/tipperary\/\">Co Tipperary<\/a>, near the world-famous Coolmore Stud in Fethard owned by businessman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/john-magnier\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/john-magnier\/\" target=\"_blank\">John Magnier<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">According to a spokesman for Coolmore, the deaths resulted from \u201chuman error\u201d after the animals\u2019 drinking water was temporarily disconnected to allow the water trough to be cleaned.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The stud said the deaths took place \u201cduring an intense hot spell last month, the hottest July on record\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe incident was immediately reported to the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine on July 28th,\u201d it added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">There was a failure to reconnect the drinking water and to monitor the cattle in a \u201ctimely manner,\u201d the company said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cEveryone in Coolmore is deeply, deeply, upset by what occurred and immediate steps were taken to prevent anything like this ever happening again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It said it cannot comment further due to an \u201congoing disciplinary process\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/department-of-agriculture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/department-of-agriculture\/\">Department of Agriculture<\/a> said it is aware of \u201can incident\u201d but said it could not comment on individual cases.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Coolmore is home to several thousand cattle as well as its extensive bloodstock holdings. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It employs about 1,300 people across its extensive horse stud and farm business.
