{"id":634101,"date":"2026-08-13T00:39:14","date_gmt":"2026-08-13T00:39:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/634101\/"},"modified":"2026-08-13T00:39:14","modified_gmt":"2026-08-13T00:39:14","slug":"nato-chief-calls-for-conversation-on-usefulness-of-irish-neutrality-in-changing-world-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/634101\/","title":{"rendered":"Nato chief calls for \u2018conversation\u2019 on usefulness of Irish neutrality in changing world \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">There should be a \u201cconversation\u201d about the future of Irish neutrality and its usefulness in a changing world, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/north-atlantic-treaty-organisation\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/north-atlantic-treaty-organisation\/\">Nato<\/a>\u2019s military commander has said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/united-states\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/united-states\/\">US<\/a> air force general Alexus Grynkewich, who serves as both the supreme allied commander of Nato and the senior US general in Europe, made the comments during a visit to Ireland where he met political and military leaders.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Speaking in the US embassy as a small but vocal group of pro-Palestinian protests gathered outside, Grynkewich outlined various threats facing Europe including from drones and shadow fleet vessels. However, he played down the likelihood of a direct military attack on Nato by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/russia\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/russia\/\">Russia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In an interview with The Irish Times, the general said Ireland \u201chas every right to make sovereign decisions about how they want to invest and take care of things\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">However, he believes there is \u201croom in the Irish body politic\u201d to have a conversation about the future position on neutrality.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWhat are the benefits of this neutrality? And is it fit for purpose for the world that we\u2019re entering into, or not? Ultimately, that\u2019s an Irish decision, and not something that I would weigh in on. But I do think that it\u2019s an important conversation to be had among the Irish people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Last month, the US ambassador to Nato, Matthew Whitaker, claimed Ireland enjoys all the benefits of membership of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2026\/06\/22\/ireland-enjoys-benefits-of-nato-without-downsides-says-us-envoy-to-military-alliance\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">alliance while incurring none of the downsides<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ireland is not a member of Nato but collaborates with the alliance in some areas and contributes troops to the Nato-led peacekeeping mission in Kosovo.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Grynkewich declined to weigh in on accusations that Ireland is a freeloader when it comes to defence. \u201cI always try not to get in the midst of political-level disagreements, whether it\u2019s among allies or between allies and our partners,\u201d the general said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He identified the Russian shadow fleet, a group of hundreds of vessels used to transport sanctioned oil, as posing a threat, including to the many subsea cables off the Irish coast. These cables are vital both for commerce and civilian use as well as for military communications, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThey\u2019re essential to my communications back to America. They\u2019re essential for Nato communications.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The presence of the shadow fleet in Ireland\u2019s economic waters means \u201cthose cables are something that\u2019s on [Russia\u2019s] mind, and they see there could be a soft underbelly that they could go after,\u201d said Grynkewich.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He called for greater intelligence sharing and interoperability between the US and Ireland in this area \u201cso we can be robust in our understanding of what the shadow fleet might be up to\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">An increase in suspected drone activity by Russia in Europe is another cause for concern, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">This includes the discovery of an explosive drone beside a Ukrainian transport aircraft in Leipzig, Germany last week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">However, asked about an incident over Dublin Bay last December where five drones were spotted operating near the flight path of Ukrainian president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/volodymyr-zelenskiy\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/volodymyr-zelenskiy\/\" target=\"_blank\">Volodymyr Zelenskiy<\/a>\u2019s aircraft, the general said Nato had no specific intelligence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cDrones can often be nefarious actors, but they can equally often be just some hobbyists or maybe just a criminal actor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI don\u2019t have any attribution to that action, but I will tell you that we do know that some of the drone activity we\u2019ve seen across the broader European continent has certainly been tied back to actors that we suspect have ties to the Russians. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cSo, it\u2019s entirely plausible, but there\u2019s no smoking gun.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The general played down tensions within Nato caused by US president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donald-trump\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donald-trump\/\">Donald Trump<\/a>\u2019s criticism of European countries who refused to lend assistance in the US <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/israel-iran-conflict\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/israel-iran-conflict\/\">war with Iran<\/a>. Trump has also caused division by repeatedly calling for Greenland, a Danish territory, to become part of the US.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIf I was Vladimir Putin, I\u2019d pay more attention to the military-to-military relationships and other relationships that we have.
