Mould remains a widespread issue in homes across the UK, with dampness appearing in the most unlikely places. Wardrobes are particularly vulnerable areas<\/a> where, without proper attention, spores can develop on clothing and footwear, resulting in permanent damage.<\/p>\n

To help homeowners prevent mould growth before it establishes itself, cleaning expert and TikToker Chantel Mila, known as Mama Mila, has revealed an unexpected method to tackle moisture accumulation.<\/p>\n

For those without a dehumidifier<\/a>, she recommends placing just two items in your wardrobe to help prevent moisture from turning into mould.<\/p>\n

She described it as a hack everyone should know about, but “no one ever teaches you”.<\/p>\n

How to prevent mould growth in wardrobes<\/p>\n

Chantel encouraged her followers to “work smarter, not harder” when approaching household cleaning tasks. Wardrobes provide ideal conditions for mould due to a mix of dampness, poor air circulation, and organic materials.<\/p>\n

It typically appears in humid environments, where moisture condenses on cool surfaces, and where wet garments provide perfect breeding grounds for mould spores to multiply, leading to mould spreading onto clothing, walls, and shelves.<\/p>\n

While many households may opt for a dehumidifier, Chantel has suggested a simple household solution that should help absorb moisture before it transforms into mould. In her latest video, Chantel recommended using uncooked rice, placing it within a fabric drawstring bag alongside a small amount of lemon oil<\/a>, to efficiently absorb surplus moisture.<\/p>\n

Rice acts as a natural desiccant<\/a>, which means it extracts moisture from the air or nearby materials, helping to maintain a dry atmosphere. Adding lemon oil can also assist in keeping wardrobes smelling refreshingly clean.<\/p>\n

Tim Warren, a DIY specialist from Adkwik, explained to Ideal Home that humidity levels within wardrobes should optimally be maintained between 40 and 60%.<\/p>\n

While he suggested using a dehumidifier as the most efficient solution, desiccants are equally a practical alternative, as they extract moisture directly from the atmosphere.<\/p>\n

This is exactly why rice demonstrates such usefulness, while other typical desiccants include baking soda<\/a>. He said: “Placing these in your wardrobe can help to keep the air dry, reducing the risk of mould growth.
