Image credit: Estelle Heitz.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sci.news\/medicine\/manuka-honey-mycobacteria-11181.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Manuka honey<\/a>, a monofloral honey derived from the nectar of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/M%C4%81nuka\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Leptospermum scoparium<\/a> in New Zealand, has attracted considerable attention because of its broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity,\u201d said Aston University researcher Jonathan Cox and his colleagues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnlike other honeys, the antibacterial activity of Manuka honey is largely attributed to non-peroxide mechanisms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCommercial Manuka honey is commonly classified using the Unique Manuka Factor (UMF) grading system, which reflects authenticity and the presence of key marker compounds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe UMF grading system is independently certified and incorporates measurements of MGO, leptosperin and dihydroxyacetone, alongside tests confirming the absence of adulteration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUMF grades typically range from 5+ to 20+ or higher, with increasing grades generally associated with higher concentrations of MGO.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, whether increasing UMF grade consistently translates into greater antibacterial activity remains unclear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Working with the honey producer Comvita, the study authors tested five grades of Manuka honey against four bacteria responsible for serious respiratory illness: methicillin-susceptible and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Klebsiella pneumoniae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.<\/p>\n<p>All grades of honey inhibited bacterial growth, and the effect grew stronger as UMF increased.<\/p>\n<p>The two staph strains, including drug-resistant MRSA, were especially vulnerable, requiring far less honey to stop their growth than the two more hardy Gram-negative species.<\/p>\n<p>A central question the researchers set out to answer was why Manuka honey works better than ordinary honey, given that both are essentially concentrated sugar solutions capable of dehydrating bacterial cells through osmotic stress.<\/p>\n<p>To test this, they compared the honey against a sugar solution matched to its exact carbohydrate makeup.<\/p>\n<p>In every case, the honey suppressed bacterial growth far more effectively than sugar alone, indicating that osmotic pressure could not be the whole story.<\/p>\n<p>When they created solutions containing MGO at concentrations matching those naturally found in each honey grade, those solutions had some antibacterial effect, but consistently less than the whole honey.<\/p>\n<p>The gap was especially pronounced against the two Gram-negative bacteria, which the MGO-only solutions struggled to suppress even at high concentrations.<\/p>\n<p>Taken together, the findings suggest that Manuka honey\u2019s antibacterial power comes from a combination of factors \u2014 sugar content, MGO and other, less-understood compounds in the honey matrix \u2014 rather than any single ingredient.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cManuka honey is often viewed through the lens of a single compound, MGO, but our findings show that the story is far more complex,\u201d Dr. Cox said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHigh-grade manuka honey appears to derive its antimicrobial activity from a combination of factors working together, and understanding those interactions could help unlock new approaches to tackling infection in an era of increasing antimicrobial resistance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt turns out, the very nature of manuka honey, in all its complexity, may hold a powerful solution to the emerging global AMR crisis.
