of his home"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>FROM MOYROSS to med tech, Desmond Collins has had quite a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.limerickleader.ie\/section\/131\/news\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">journey<\/a>, and he remains \u201cdeeply proud\u201d of where he&#8217;s from.<\/p>\n<p>Now a senior manager at a med tech company in Castletroy, Desmond,\u00a0 38, never shies away from his roots.<\/p>\n<p>He refused to use a different address on job applications to avoid the stigma when he was young, instead choosing to push through the \u201cold perceptions\u201d that people had about his home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt used to annoy me,\u201d Desmond said, \u201cas if being from Moyross made success unexpected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now, he has a far greater understanding of how his childhood shaped who he is, and a far greater appreciation for the sacrifices his parents made to make sure he had every opportunity possible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s only now I recognise that the times when they would leave my brother and sister and me in the kitchen to eat dinner and they would go into the sitting room &#8211; it was because there wasn&#8217;t enough food for them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ MORE:<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.limerickleader.ie\/news\/local-news\/1891276\/limerick-charity-launches-fundraiser-as-vital-van-is-no-longer-fit-for-purpose.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Limerick charity launches fundraiser as vital van is &#8216;no longer fit for purpose&#8217;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Education was another priority for his parents, with homework always being done the second they got home, before they were allowed to play outside.<\/p>\n<p>Desmond admits he had \u201cno interest\u201d in college, but his parents\u2019 encouraged him to go to the then-LIT, \u201cjust over the back wall\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf my parents didn&#8217;t do the little things, I wouldn&#8217;t be where I am today,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Though he grew up around feuds, drive-bys and raids &#8211; which he admits they&#8217;d get \u201cserious enjoyment\u201d out of as kids &#8211; he maintains the belief that there were \u201conly about four or five bad eggs&#8230; there was a lot of lovely people\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He visits his parents, who still live in Moyross, every weekend.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He has inherited their passion for education, encouraging young people who come from a similar background to him to pursue third-level education, be it university, a PLC or a trade.<\/p>\n<p>ADVERTISEMENT &#8211;
