{"id":635009,"date":"2026-08-13T12:52:19","date_gmt":"2026-08-13T12:52:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/635009\/"},"modified":"2026-08-13T12:52:19","modified_gmt":"2026-08-13T12:52:19","slug":"rte-radio-1-is-still-irelands-most-popular-station-but-its-down-50000-listeners-since-2025","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/635009\/","title":{"rendered":"RT\u00c9 Radio 1 is still Ireland&#8217;s most popular station, but it&#8217;s down 50,000 listeners since 2025"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>RT\u00c9 RADIO 1 remains the most-listened-to station in the country but some of its popular shows have seen a decline, according to radio data published today.<\/p>\n<p>The latest JNLR figures cover the 12-month period up to June of this year.<\/p>\n<p>The JNLR survey is conducted among an annual sample of around 16,800 people aged 15 and over.<\/p>\n<p>It uses the \u201cone-day-aided\u201d recall methodology, whereby the respondent recalls all their listening activity for the day prior.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>RT\u00c9<\/p>\n<p>All the top 10 most-listened-to radio shows in Ireland belong to RT\u00c9, while its stations also hold 16 of the top 20 programmes.<\/p>\n<p>RT\u00c9 Radio 1 remains Ireland\u2019s biggest radio station, but it has seen a fall in its numbers in recent times.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The most recent JNLR figures covering the last 12 months up to June show it had a weekly average audience of\u00a01.354 million.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s a slight dip of 2,000 since the previous figures in March, and a sizeable fall of about 49,000 since the 12-month period ending in June 2025, when it clocked up a weekly audience of 1.403 million.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Morning Ireland is still the most-listened-to programme with an audience of 457,000, up 5,000, but down 12,000 in the year.<\/p>\n<p>Other shows on Radio 1 \u2013 while remaining popular \u2013 have seen a decline for a second survey in a row.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/1786625536_576_.jpeg\"  alt=\"download (4)\" class=\"alignnone inline-image\" \/><br \/>\n            David McCullagh\n<\/p>\n<p>Today with David McCullagh has seen a slight drop of 1,000, down to 422,000.<\/p>\n<p>In his new slot, however, Oliver Callan sees a more marked drop, down 11,000 to 285,000.<\/p>\n<p>Liveline has dropped 14,000 to 254,000. Joe Duffy signed off from the show in 2025 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thejournal.ie\/jnlr-radio-listening-figures-june-2025-liveline-rte-6784450-Aug2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">with an audience of 299,000<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/1786625537_194_.jpeg\"  alt=\"river (30)\" class=\"alignnone inline-image\" \/><br \/>\n            Kieran Cuddihy\n<\/p>\n<p>News at One is down 2,000 listeners when compared to the last survey, with an audience of 273,000, but down 25,000 when compared to last year\u2019s audience of 298,000.<\/p>\n<p>Drivetime with Katie Hannon and Colm \u00d3 Mong\u00e1in meanwhile remains steady when compared to the last survey, on 211,000.<\/p>\n<p>And while Brendan O\u2019Connor remains popular, he too has seen declines.<\/p>\n<p>His Saturday show has 400,000 listeners, down 14,000, while his Sunday show had an audience of 399,000, down 10,000.<\/p>\n<p>Over on RT\u00c9 2FM, the newly extended 2FM Breakfast with Carl, Roz &amp; Aisling has 175,000 listeners tuning in on weekday mornings, while some 86,000 tune in for 2FM Mornings with Doireann Garrihy\/ Laura Fox.<\/p>\n<p>Patricia Monahan, director of audio at RT\u00c9,\u00a0said \u201cthese results are very encouraging and clearly indicate that our new schedules across RT\u00c9 Radio 1 and 2FM are beginning to resonate with audiences\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Tara Campbell, head of RT\u00c9 Radio 1,\u00a0said there have been \u201csolid performances for both\u202fMorning Ireland\u202fand\u202fToday with David Mc Cullagh, massively outperforming all of their competitors at this time of day\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Newstalk<\/p>\n<p>Newstalk is five months on from the most <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thejournal.ie\/anton-savage-to-replace-ciara-kelly-and-shane-coleman-on-newstalk-breakfast-6903997-Dec2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">significant overhaul in the station\u2019s history<\/a>, and it said there has been a \u201cstrong audience response to the refreshed line-up\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Its weekly audience is 855,000, up 9,000, while its daily audience is up 18,000 to 484,000.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/1786625538_757_.jpeg\"  alt=\"river (29)\" class=\"alignnone inline-image\" \/><br \/>\n            Claire Byrne                    Conor McCabe photography<\/p>\n<p>    Conor McCabe photography\n<\/p>\n<p>The Claire Byrne Show now has an audience of 210,000, up 4,000, while the Hard Shoulder with Ciara Kelly and Shane Coleman remains steady on 153,000.<\/p>\n<p>Anton Savage left his Saturday show on Newstalk in February to take over the breakfast show and has gained 10,000 listeners, with an audience of 168,000 \u2013 Newstalk said this is a record jump within the station for this time slot.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/1786625538_933_.jpeg\"  alt=\"river (28)\" class=\"alignnone inline-image\" \/><br \/>\n            Anton Savage                    Newstalk<\/p>\n<p>    Newstalk\n<\/p>\n<p>The Pat Kenny Show meanwhile achieved another Newstalk record, with his Saturday show becoming the most listened-to programme in the station\u2019s history with an audience of 167,000, up 7,000.<\/p>\n<p>His Sunday show has also added 3,000 listeners, to reach 122,000.<\/p>\n<p>Today FM<\/p>\n<p>Over on Today FM, the station now reaches a weekly audience of 974,000, a jump of 20,000 since the last survey.<\/p>\n<p>Daily listeners have hit 524,000, up 4,000 since the last survey.<\/p>\n<p>The Ian Dempsey Breakfast Show has added 8,000 listeners to reach an audience of 240,000.
