They’re also not alone. A handful of other everyday staples round out the list, and the best part is you probably already have most of them on hand. Keep reading for what to put on your plate, and why it matters.

HUIZENG HU//Getty Images

Why Mushrooms Are Good For Brain Health

Mushrooms owe a lot of their brain-supporting potential to a compound called ergothioneine, or ERGO for short. It’s a potent antioxidant that your body can’t produce on its own, and mushrooms happen to be one of the best food sources.

Researchers have been paying close attention to ERGO because of how it may relate to brain aging. In one study of nearly 500 older adults attending memory clinics, those with lower blood levels of ergothioneine experienced faster decline in memory, language, and daily function over several years. The study was observational, so this does not mean ERGO is a cure for anything, but it does suggest the compound may be worth watching as a marker of brain health.

But there’s more. In a study of 663 older adults, higher mushroom consumption was associated with a lower likelihood of having mild cognitive impairment, even after researchers accounted for lifestyle and demographic factors. Again, this shows a link rather than proof of cause and effect, but it adds to a growing pile of evidence pointing in a promising direction.

Why does this matter for your grocery list? Because some researchers suggest the typical American diet may run low in ERGO, and we can’t make it ourselves. We have to get it from food. That’s a pretty compelling reason to keep mushrooms in regular rotation.

And mushrooms are ridiculously easy to eat more of. Sauté them in olive oil with garlic. Fold them into scrambled eggs. Roast a tray of oyster mushrooms until crispy. Blend finely chopped shiitakes into ground meat for burgers or tacos. They’re savory, satisfying, and they stretch a meal without much effort.

Penpak S.//Getty Images

Other Best Foods For Brain Health

No single food carries your brain on its own. Brain health comes from an overall pattern of eating, day after day. So while mushrooms deserve the spotlight, a few other everyday staples deserve a spot on your plate.

Eggs

Eggs are one of the most convenient brain-friendly foods out there, and they’re likely already in your fridge. They’re the top food source of choline, a nutrient your brain uses to make acetylcholine, a chemical messenger involved in memory and learning.

The research here is worth knowing. In a study of more than 1,000 older adults, consuming at least one egg per week was associated with a roughly 47 percent lower risk of Alzheimer’s dementia, and about 39 percent of that association appeared to be linked to dietary choline.

Add Delish as a preferred source in your Google search results.

Use your Google account to add this to your settings.

Add to Google settings

Scramble them, hard-boil a batch for the week, or fold them into that mushroom sauté I mentioned earlier.

Walnuts

Walnuts are worth keeping in your kitchen for more than just snacking. They’re a source of polyphenols that support brain health in a pretty cool way: Your gut bacteria convert them into compounds called urolithins, which have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that researchers believe may benefit the brain over time.

In one two-year study, older adults who ate walnuts regularly showed meaningful improvements in cognitive performance, and those urolithins were proposed to be part of the reason why. So it’s not just about eating a handful of nuts and hoping for the best. There’s a real biological pathway here, and it goes straight through your gut.

The research is still growing, but it’s a genuinely good reason to keep a bag on hand. Just put them in your fridge after you open the bag. Their natural oils stay fresher longer that way.

Berries

Berries are one of those foods that feel indulgent and are actually really good for you. Blueberries, strawberries, and blackberries are all sources of antioxidants that help protect your brain from the wear and tear that builds up over time.

Fresh, frozen, in season, out of season—it genuinely doesn’t matter. They all have the good stuff in them.

Keep a bag of frozen mixed berries in your freezer, and you’re always one scoop away from a better breakfast. Stir them into oatmeal, blend them into a smoothie, or just eat them straight from the bowl. Low lift, big payoff.

Leafy Greens

Spinach, kale, and other leafy greens round out the lineup. They’re packed with folate and vitamin K, and people who eat them regularly tend to show slower cognitive decline as they age.

The bar for getting more of them in your life is refreshingly low. Wilt a handful of spinach into eggs or pasta. Toss some arugula under whatever you’re already making for dinner. Build a quick side salad while something’s heating up on the stove. It takes almost no effort, and it genuinely adds up over time.

How To Add Brain-Healthy Foods To Your Diet

Your brain is working hard for you every single day. The least you can do is feed it well, and honestly? It’s not asking for much.

Mushrooms sautéed in garlic. A bowl of berries with your morning oats. Walnuts grabbed straight from the bag. These aren’t foods you have to force down out of obligation. They’re actually delicious, and they happen to be some of the best things you can eat as part of a brain-supporting diet. That’s a win-win for your brain and your taste buds.

For cognitive health support, the great news is that you don’t need a new diet plan or a pantry full of supplements. You just need to start somewhere. Pick one food from this list and make it a regular addition to your meals. Then add another. Small shifts, repeated consistently, are how real change actually happens. Your future self will be glad you started today.

[277
3579,268515,343,18,135,19,17,201411,590,508,163154,268514,240005
post-635297","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-nutrition","tag-content-type-news-explainer","tag-contentid-2cd5f90c-10aa-4447-816d-73ba70940ac9","tag-displaytype-standard-article","tag-eire","tag-health","tag-ie","tag-ireland","tag-issyndicated-false","tag-locale-us","tag-nutrition","tag-read_time-5","tag-shorttitle-the-best-foods-for-brain-health","tag-sponsored-false
["GET
