{"id":635439,"date":"2026-08-13T18:08:11","date_gmt":"2026-08-13T18:08:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/635439\/"},"modified":"2026-08-13T18:08:11","modified_gmt":"2026-08-13T18:08:11","slug":"irish-student-17-dies-following-accident-at-holiday-accommodation-in-greece-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/635439\/","title":{"rendered":"Irish student (17) dies following accident at holiday accommodation in Greece \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A 17-year-old student who won a prestigious <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/stripe\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/stripe\">award<\/a> earlier this year has died following an accident in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/greece\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/greece\">Greece<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Alex McKee, who was due to enter his Leaving Certificate year at Terence MacSwiney Community College in Knocknaheeny, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/cork\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/cork\/\">Cork<\/a> city, died suddenly on Sunday.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It is understood an accident occurred in the bathroom of the accommodation in which he was staying with family members on the island of Kimolos. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A postmortem examination, which is due to be carried out on Thursday, will determine the exact cause of death. McKee was visiting the Aegean Sea island with his Greek mother and his sister. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Former lord mayor of Cork and sitting Fianna F\u00e1il councillor Tony Fitzgerald said it was very upsetting to hear of the death of such a \u201cvibrant and talented\u201d young man.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThis is such a tragic accident. It is very sad for his family and his fellow students who were expecting to start the school year with him in a few weeks\u2019 time. President [Catherine] Connolly visited the school a few months ago to recognise the vision and achievements of students at the school. This is a huge shock. Every effort will be made to support the family going forward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Department of Foreign Affairs is providing consular assistance to the family of the deceased. Funeral arrangements have yet to be finalised. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"> In January of this year, McKee came to national attention alongside his classmates Mikayla Ryan and Reece Morey when they scooped the Ombudsman for Children Award at the Stripe Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition 2026. They also won first place in the category of Health and Wellbeing. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Their project, which was entitled Bumblebee, was inspired by Mikayla\u2019s brother Richard Ryan. Bumblebee is a communications tool devised by the students.
