{"id":636949,"date":"2026-08-14T14:42:32","date_gmt":"2026-08-14T14:42:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/636949\/"},"modified":"2026-08-14T14:42:32","modified_gmt":"2026-08-14T14:42:32","slug":"eclipse-threatened-electricity-shortage-as-solar-power-generation-dipped-to-near-zero-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/636949\/","title":{"rendered":"Eclipse threatened electricity shortage as solar power generation dipped to near zero \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/solar-eclipse\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/solar-eclipse\/\">solar eclipse<\/a> on Wednesday threatened a shortage in electricity that prompted the national grid to call on an emergency power plant to ensure adequate supplies, it has emerged.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">National electricity grid operator <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/eirgrid\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/eirgrid\/\">EirGrid<\/a> drafted in an emergency power plant in Tarbert, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/clare\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/clare\">Co Clare<\/a>, after the eclipse shut the solar farms that have been supplying large amounts of electricity this summer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The increased risk of a shortage in electricity sparked a warning to suppliers on Wednesday evening that ran from 6.55pm, shortly before the partial eclipse began, to 8.21pm, around an hour after it passed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Wednesday\u2019s hot weather increased demand for electricity, EirGrid said in a statement confirming the squeeze on power supplies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A lack of wind cut off the other main source of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/renewable-energy\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/renewable-energy\">renewable<\/a> electricity on which the system normally relies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Meanwhile, the temporary shut down of three large power plants for routine maintenance, and low imports from Britain, which supplies 12 per cent of Irish electricity, added to the pressure, EirGrid said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWind generation was low and solar generation dropped to near zero during the solar eclipse,\u201d the company said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">EirGrid said it had prepared for the eclipse, putting plans in place to ensure continued electricity supplies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Single Electricity Market Operator, which is responsible for overseeing the Irish power market, issued a \u201cmargin warning\u201d on Wednesday evening and told suppliers that EirGrid had deployed the emergency generator.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">However, the warning did not move to \u201calert stage\u201d, which would have signalled increased risks to electricity supplies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The operator issues such warnings when electricity consumption has reached a point where the buffer between available supply and likely demand is tighter than it should be. They do not signal that power cuts are imminent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">EirGrid operator commissioned four \u201ctemporary emergency generators\u201d in Dublin, Co Clare and the midlands several years ago as demand for electricity outpaced supplies after delays in building planned power stations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The company intended them as a backstop to supplies during times of peak winter demand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">EirGrid confirmed that Wednesday was the first time it called on the Tarbert emergency power plant to provide electricity.
