SpaceX closed its $60 billion acquisition of the AI coding startup Cursor on Friday. The two companies first partnered in April, giving Elon Musk’s space company<\/a> the right to buy Cursor. SpaceX officially committed to the acquisition<\/a> in June.<\/p>\n On SpaceX’s August earnings call<\/a>, Musk was hesitant to give any details about the SpaceX-Cursor partnership. “We don’t want to jump the gun on regulators for closing the acquisition,” he said.<\/p>\n The two companies, however, have already been close collaborators. That included using “trillions of tokens of Cursor data,” the AI coding company said. It was the first model Cursor built that wasn’t only for software engineering.<\/p>\n “It’s been a pleasure working with the SpaceXAI team on it,” Cursor cofounder Aman Sanger said on X in July.<\/p>\n The company also helped train Grok 4.6, which SpaceX released on Wednesday.<\/p>\n Compute<\/p>\n Cursor’s partnership had one colossal benefit.<\/p>\n The company got to use Colossus, SpaceX’s supercomputer powered by 200,000 Nvidia GPUs. The data center is also used by Anthropic<\/a>.<\/p>\n In its April announcement, Cursor wrote that using Colossus would allow the company to “dramatically scale up” its models’ intelligence.<\/p>\n “We’ve wanted to push our training efforts much further, but we’ve been bottlenecked by compute,” Cursor wrote.<\/p>\n Bundled subscriptions<\/p>\n
