\n\tFifteen years after Ryan Reynolds<\/a> brought Hal Jordan to life in Green Lantern<\/a>, there\u2019s a new superhero in town. <\/p>\n

\n\tAs part of James Gunn<\/a> and Peter Safran\u2019s revamped DC Universe<\/a>, Kyle Chandler<\/a> is starring as Hal in the new series Lanterns<\/a>, with the legendary hero showing new Green Lantern recruit\u00a0John Stewart (played by Aaron Pierre<\/a>) the ropes\u00a0as they investigate a murder in\u00a0Nebraska. The series<\/a> has drawn early comparisons to True Detective and is quite a different take than the Reynolds film, which famously bombed<\/a> at the box office.<\/p>\n

\n\tAt the L.A. premiere on Thursday, co-creator Tom King admitted he has \u201ca soft spot\u201d for the Green Lantern movie but \u201cthat was big and cosmic and huge \u2014 let\u2019s take that energy but turn it into a character study and bring it down so that we can give something that has scale and power and energy in a different sort of way.\u201d Chandler also emphasized when it came to portraying Hal Jordan, \u201cI did my own thing\u201d in comparison to Reynolds\u2019 version. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe main thing was to get the relationship down with Aaron and us to figure out what our parameters were, what we wanted to do and to get that relationship opened up and have fun together, and luckily that worked well,\u201d Chandler continued. \u201cWe get on really easily so that was imperative.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tKing recalled the series<\/a>\u2018 origins, which began with a meeting with Gunn and Safran as the pair were inspired by Damon Lindelof\u2019s Watchmen series and said they needed \u201ca 9 o\u2019clock HBO show for superheroes.\u201d King pitched doing a cop story after the success of shows like True Detective and Mare of Easttown in that slot, and before long, he and fellow co-creators Lindelof and Chris Mundy came together to develop Lanterns.<\/p>\n

\n\tAside from Chandler signing on (drawn in by the script, as he admitted that if someone had just described the series to him \u201cI don\u2019t think I\u2019d have had much interest, but when I read the script and read how they did this, it was far different than anything I expected\u201d), Pierre rounded out the central duo, following a previous relationship with Gunn from years earlier. <\/p>\n

\n\tThe filmmaker previously revealed that Pierre was in the running to play\u00a0Adam Warlock in\u00a0Guardians of the Galaxy<\/a> Vol. 3, a role that eventually went to Will Poulter. Now the two have reunited \u2014 Pierre\u2019s Jon Stewart will also appear in<\/a> Gunn\u2019s Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow \u2014 as the actor said, \u201cJames is an extraordinarily talented individual and it\u2019s been a gift to get to know him creatively \u2014 as a collaborator, as a director, as a writer, as a creator in general. It\u2019s also been a pleasure to get to know him and develop the beginnings of a friendship. He\u2019s a blast to be around and we look forward to many, many more years of creative collaboration.\u201d<\/p>\n
