Valuation undisclosed.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Key ecosystem partners<\/strong>: GoTab, Qu POS<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An AI-powered restaurant operations platform raised $80 million to boost its products and reach more customers, a notable move \u2014 especially in the DMV region, where large investments typically go to national security and defense tech firms.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This blowout Series D brings <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marginedge.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">MarginEdge<\/a>\u2019s total funding to approximately $162 million, and was possible through leaning on existing investors, cofounder and CEO Bo Davis said, during <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2026\/03\/01\/saas-in-saas-out-heres-whats-driving-the-saaspocalypse\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">what has<\/a> been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.economist.com\/business\/2026\/06\/10\/fear-of-the-saaspocalypse-is-tormenting-techland?utm_medium=cpc.adword.pd&amp;utm_source=google&amp;ppccampaignID=17210591673&amp;ppcadID=&amp;utm_campaign=a.22brand_pmax&amp;utm_content=conversion.direct-response.anonymous&amp;gclsrc=aw.ds&amp;gad_source=1&amp;gad_campaignid=17210596221&amp;gbraid=0AAAAADBuq3IC4eBJyx4dpMVel__OLQMJk&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjw7eXTBhDBARIsAKF-w474vMC77kkgiTC1ffI_2LIlyRIbHZmCfvvL1TzsaGJw6yJeXcnUGG4aAs35EALw_wcB\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">called a<\/a> \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/08\/07\/saaspocalypse-debate-intensifies-as-software-stocks-swing-wildly.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SaaSpocalypse<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe were very lucky to have investors that have deep enough pockets and the excitement and interest in what we\u2019re doing,\u201d Davis told Technical.ly. \u201cThey don\u2019t do due diligence. They\u2019re on our board. They know everything we\u2019re doing.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cWe were very lucky to have investors that have deep enough pockets and the excitement and interest in what we\u2019re doing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bo Davis, MarginEdge<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The raise, announced today, will go towards hiring in R&amp;D and sales and marketing, per Davis. Founded in 2015, MarginEdge sells products tracking management and payment systems to help restaurants save money and time. Operators connect their accounting and point-of-service systems, and upload individual invoices to automate sales reports and keep tabs on food price increases, for example.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vibe coding and AI agent adoption are making it easier for companies to <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2026\/03\/01\/saas-in-saas-out-heres-whats-driving-the-saaspocalypse\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">build their own software<\/a> products, so investments in these kinds of software-as-a-service firms are becoming less popular. Plus, early-stage cyber, AI and energy infrastructure companies have received <a href=\"https:\/\/technical.ly\/entrepreneurship\/capital-consolidation-drives-dc-startup-landscape\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">most of the capital invested<\/a> in the DC region recently, not those in hospitality tech.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MarginEdge\u2019s round, a combination of debt and equity, was led by existing investors <a href=\"https:\/\/www.schoonercapital.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Schooner Capital<\/a> out of Boston and <a href=\"https:\/\/penco-capital.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Penco Capital <\/a>in Singapore. Returning investors Osage Venture Partners and Derive Ventures also participated, alongside equity provider Western Alliance Bank.<\/p>\n<p>Human in the loop\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since most restaurants use pen and paper for invoicing, a key part of the MarginEdge platform is scanning these physical papers to gather information.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes, the AI tools do not read handwriting accurately on the average 300,000 invoices per week across 12,000 restaurants including Cava and Maman. That\u2019s why MarginEdge employs hundreds of people \u2014 to ensure that information is gathered accurately, per Davis.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MarginEdge has 900 staff members, with 300 in the US and 600 overseas primarily in India and Bangladesh. Davis said. Specific hiring plans thanks to the funding were not disclosed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe needed humans in the loop from the beginning,\u201d Davis said, \u201cto provide the level of quality we wanted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Prioritizing product development\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Davis, who owned a dozen restaurants before launching MarginEdge 11 years ago, has implemented machine learning since the start, he said. AI systems becoming more sophisticated in recent years have allowed the company to evolve much quicker than before, he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MarginEdge is aiming to get at every aspect of restaurant operations, Davis said. That includes hardware \u2014 MarginEdge sells scales to measure inventory by weight, which automatically uploads to the company\u2019s platform.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">New product releases include an integration for restaurants to <a href=\"https:\/\/technical.ly\/civics\/placemakr-secures-historic-national-guard-housing-deal\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">link the platform to chatbots<\/a> like Claude and ChatGPT.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the coming months, the company is releasing \u201cSmart Prep,\u201d a product to automate and guide workers how much food prep is needed per shift based on historical data from restaurant sales.
