The recall was issued after the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) notified the company that a sample of its Food To Live brand Organic Supergreens Mix for sale tested positive for the bacteria.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"1\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Nine products distributed nationwide have now been yanked, including powders from the brand\u2019s Organic SuperGreens Powder Mix, Organic Moringa Leaf Powder, Organic Kale Powder, and Organic Wheatgrass Powder products. (You can see the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/safety\/recalls-market-withdrawals-safety-alerts\/lexunder-inc-recalls-food-live-brand-green-powder-products-because-possible-health-risk\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/safety\/recalls-market-withdrawals-safety-alerts\/lexunder-inc-recalls-food-live-brand-green-powder-products-because-possible-health-risk\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"full list here\" data-node-id=\"1.1\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">full list here<\/a>.) The source of the contamination hasn\u2019t been identified, and Lexunder Inc. is suspending its production and distribution of its products while an investigation continues.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"2\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">The recall comes a few months after the FDA announced another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/food\/outbreaks-foodborne-illness\/outbreak-investigation-salmonella-moringa-leaf-powder-january-2026\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/food\/outbreaks-foodborne-illness\/outbreak-investigation-salmonella-moringa-leaf-powder-january-2026\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"recall \" data-node-id=\"2.1\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">recall <\/a>of green supplement products that contained imported moringa leaf powder from India after it sparked a salmonella outbreak. Hundreds of people across the country became sick during the outbreak and 36 were hospitalized.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"5\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">While most people think of raw poultry and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/nutrition\/a70226713\/plant-forward-mushroom-dinner\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/nutrition\/a70226713\/plant-forward-mushroom-dinner\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"eggs\" data-node-id=\"5.1\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">eggs<\/a> with salmonella, food safety experts say it isn\u2019t surprising for salmonella to lurk\u2014and thrive\u2014in dried green supplements.<\/p>\n<p><strong data-node-id=\"6.0\">The Seemingly Infinite Number of Ways Salmonella Gets Into Green Supplements<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"7\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\"><strong data-node-id=\"7.0\">WHEN<\/strong> <strong data-node-id=\"7.2.0\">MH<\/strong> <strong data-node-id=\"7.4\">ASKED<\/strong> food safety experts what could have gone wrong, it seemed like one small misstep could trigger a salmonella contamination.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"8\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">The most likely scenario is that salmonella was on raw plants that were used to make the powder, says <a rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.udel.edu\/academics\/colleges\/canr\/departments\/animal-and-food-sciences\/faculty-staff\/kali-kniel\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.udel.edu\/academics\/colleges\/canr\/departments\/animal-and-food-sciences\/faculty-staff\/kali-kniel\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Kalmia E. Kniel, PhD\" data-node-id=\"8.3\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\">Kalmia E. Kniel, PhD<\/a>, professor and chair of microbial food safety at the University of Delaware. \u201cIt could be that contamination occurred during growth, harvest, and processing of these products.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"9\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">For example, salmonella could have made contact with plants through contaminated irrigation water, animals interacting with the plants, or the use of improperly treated manure as fertilizer, adds <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canr.msu.edu\/people\/wade-syers\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.canr.msu.edu\/people\/wade-syers\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Wade Syers, DSocSci\" data-node-id=\"9.1\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Wade Syers, DSocSci<\/a>, food safety specialist at Michigan State University. Syers also lists off contaminated equipment, or poor employee hygiene during growing, harvesting, processing, or packaging as potential sources.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"10\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Once contamination occurs, Syers warns that dehydration may not eliminate the bacteria unless a validated kill step is used.<\/p>\n<p><strong data-node-id=\"11.0\">How Does Salmonella Survive In Powders?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"12\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\"><strong data-node-id=\"12.0\">THESE BACTERIA ARE<\/strong> actually pretty good at hanging on to dried, powdery ingredients. \u201cMany people assume bacteria cannot survive without moisture, but Salmonella can persist in dry conditions for extended periods,\u201d Syers says. \u201cThis is one reason we occasionally see salmonella outbreaks linked to dry products.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong data-node-id=\"13.0\">The Dangers of Salmonella<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"14\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\"><strong data-node-id=\"14.0\">YOU CAN\u2019T SEE <\/strong>or smell salmonella, so a product may look stable and shelf-safe while bacteria lurk inside, Syers says. salmonella causes about <a rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/salmonella\/about\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/salmonella\/about\/index.html\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"1.35 million infections\" data-node-id=\"14.2\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\">1.35 million infections<\/a> in the U.S. each year, making it a major source of food-borne illness.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"15\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Eating contaminated food is the biggest cause of salmonella infections in the US. However, you can also get sick from drinking contaminated water or coming into contact with contaminated animals, animal poop, and the places where animals live.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"16\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Most people with salmonella have watery <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/health\/a46887696\/stress-anxiety-diarrhea\/\" target=\"_self\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/health\/a46887696\/stress-anxiety-diarrhea\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"diarrhea\" data-node-id=\"16.1\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">diarrhea<\/a> and stomach cramps. Some may also have nausea, headache, and vomiting. In severe cases, salmonella can spread outside of the intestines to cause infections of the blood, brain and spinal cord, bone, and joints. In a small group of cases, people with a salmonella infection may develop pain in the joints, known as reactive arthritis.<\/p>\n<p><strong data-node-id=\"17.0\">How to Lower Risk of Contamination in Supplements<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"18\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\"><strong data-node-id=\"18.0\">WHILE THERE HAVE<\/strong> already been two recalls linked to green supplements this year, Kniel stresses that not all products in this category are bad. \u201cThere are many other products not implicated in recent outbreaks,\u201d she points out.
