{"id":63871,"date":"2025-09-14T17:07:15","date_gmt":"2025-09-14T17:07:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/63871\/"},"modified":"2025-09-14T17:07:15","modified_gmt":"2025-09-14T17:07:15","slug":"montecito-teen-writes-childrens-book-about-healing-from-natural-disasters-local-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/63871\/","title":{"rendered":"Montecito Teen Writes Children&#8217;s Book About Healing From Natural Disasters | Local News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When Hannah Hedrick was 11 years old, her hometown of Montecito was devastated by the 2018 mudslides and debris flow following the Thomas Fire.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As her family tried to escape, their car started sinking in the mud and they had to wait in their home with no running water or electricity before the National Guard came to their rescue.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything that I knew was kind of displaced,\u201d Hedrick said. \u201cI had to go to school at (Santa Barbara) City College in tents, and then every single time it rained we had to evacuate again and go to neighboring schools. I was obviously displaced from my house for a really long time. It was just a very scary time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now 17, the <a href=\"https:\/\/sbhs.sbunified.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Santa Barbara High School <\/a>senior is using her experience to help the younger generation devastated by natural disasters.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In April, Hedrick self published her own children\u2019s book,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Side-Stronger-we-Stand\/dp\/B0F4BMZ8KY\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> \u201cSide By Side \u2013 Stronger We Stand,\u201d<\/a> about a group of woodland animals dealing with the emotional fallout of a fire in their coastal town.<\/p>\n<p>The idea came to Hedrick earlier this year while volunteering at a clothing drive for families impacted by the Palisades Fire at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.noozhawk.com\/all-saints-by-the-sea-parish-school-a-legacy-of-joyful-learning-since-1965\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">All Saints By-the-Sea Parish School<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just felt like I needed to do more, and the idea just came to me,\u201d Hedrick said. \u201cI\u2019ve always loved writing, and I love kids.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The devastation of the Palisades Fire hit close to home for Hedrick, not just because of her own experience but because her great-aunt and cousins lost their home in the blaze.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The story\u2019s hero is a German shepherd named Tucker, based on Hedrick\u2019s real life furry friend of the same name who passed away earlier this summer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u201cSide By Side \u2013 Stronger We Stand\u201d sees Tucker teaching his animal friends \u2013 an owl, a raccoon, and a bunny \u2013 about how to cope with the fear and anxiety they had after the fire.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"780\" height=\"520\" data-wp-class--hide=\"state.isContentHidden\" data-wp-class--show=\"state.isContentVisible\" data-wp-init=\"callbacks.setButtonStyles\" data-wp-on-async--click=\"actions.showLightbox\" data-wp-on-async--load=\"callbacks.setButtonStyles\" data-wp-on-async-window--resize=\"callbacks.setButtonStyles\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/091025-Hannah-Hedrick-2-RC.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-748809\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>\t\tHedrick and her new dog Poppy. Credit: Rebecca Caraway \/ Noozhawk photo<\/p>\n<p>Hedrick added the coping mechanisms she learned into the book, such as taking deep breaths, writing about your feelings, getting outside, dancing, and leaning on friends.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Since publishing the children\u2019s book, Hedrick has read the story at <a href=\"https:\/\/godmothers.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Godmothers Bookstore <\/a>in Summerland, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.noozhawk.com\/all-saints-by-the-sea-parish-school-a-legacy-of-joyful-learning-since-1965\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">All Saints By-the-Sea Parish School<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montecitou.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Montecito Union School<\/a>, and throughout the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopeschooldistrict.org\/en-US?showHomepage=true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hope Elementary School District<\/a> in Santa Barbara.<\/p>\n<p>The readings have even given her a chance to connect with families that relocated to the Santa Barbara area after losing their homes in the Los Angeles County fires.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery reading I\u2019ve done I\u2019ve watched kids just open up and practice the strategies and ask to take the book home to share with their family,\u201d Hedrick said. \u201cI can tell that I\u2019m actually making a difference; it\u2019s felt pretty good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In May she read the book to a pre-kindergarten class at All Saints By-the-Sea Parish School that at the time had five children who lost their homes in the Palisades Fire.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was kind of sweet to have her read to that class because those children were experiencing something similar to what she experienced,\u201d said School Director Jennifer Tucker. <\/p>\n<p>Tucker was Hedrick\u2019s preschool teacher, so her returning to the school to read the book was a bit of a full-circle moment for everyone.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s sweet to have former students come visit us anyways, but then to come back at such a young age and read to her former school and her former class, it\u2019s a sweet experience,\u201d Tucker said.<\/p>\n<p>Hedrick said she spent roughly four months working on the book. Hedrick decided to print the book in black and white to save on printing costs and so children can color the pages.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When Hedrick came home with the idea for the book, her mom, Candy Hedrick, thought it was a great and unique way to help families impacted by disasters.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do think you carry anxiety when you go through a natural disaster, whether you recognize it or not,\u201d Candy Hedrick said. \u201cLearning what to do to help that anxiety is really nice, and it\u2019s just sad that natural disasters are such a part of these kids\u2019 experience.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Her advice to parents dealing with the fallout of natural disasters is to talk about it with their children so the process doesn\u2019t feel so lonely.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think that it\u2019s good to talk about it, because it\u2019s easy to get distracted in all the to-do\u2019s after a natural disaster, because there\u2019s such a process of rebuilding,\u201d Hedrick said. \u201cIt\u2019s really nice to continue to talk about it so that people don\u2019t feel alone.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For Hannah Hedrick, she hopes kids realize that they aren\u2019t alone in their fears and it\u2019s good to talk about what they went through.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re not alone in what you\u2019re feeling,\u201d Hedrick said. \u201cIt\u2019s okay to talk about it, and you will get through it.
