A controversial documentary about a retired Israeli general\u2019s rescue mission on Oct. 7 has won the People\u2019s Choice Award for best documentary at the Toronto International Film Festival.<\/p>\n

The Road Between Us: The Ultimate Rescue<\/a>, directed by Barry Avrich, drew competing pro-Palestinian and pro-Israel protests outside its single screening this week.<\/p>\n

The film chronicles retired Israeli general Noam Tibon\u2019s effort to rescue his family during the 2023 Hamas attacks in Israel, when 1,200 people were killed and 251 abducted.<\/p>\n

Some pro-Palestinian demonstrators called the documentary \u201cIsraeli propaganda,\u201d though they hadn\u2019t seen it. <\/p>\n

TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey says reversals around Oct. 7 documentary \u2018caused a lot of pain\u2019<\/a><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the general People\u2019s Choice Award \u2013 long considered a bellwether for the Oscars \u2013 went to Hamnet, Chloe Zhao\u2019s Shakespeare origin story starring Paul Mescal and Jessie Buckley.<\/p>\n

The film, adapted from Maggie O\u2019Farrell\u2019s 2020 novel, is about how grief, following the death of their son, Hamnet, may have inspired Shakespeare\u2019s greatest tragedy, Hamlet.<\/p>\n

The film, which Focus Features will release in theaters Nov. 27, is likely to return Zhao and her two stars to the Academy Awards. Zhao\u2019s 2020 drama Nomadland won best picture and best director for Zhao. It, too, won the People\u2019s Choice Award in Toronto.<\/p>\n

Festival attendees vote for People\u2019s Choice Award. The runners-up were a pair of Netflix releases: Guillermo del Toro\u2019s Frankenstein and Rian Johnson\u2019s Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery.<\/p>\n

The audience award for international film went to Park Chan-wook\u2019s No Other Choice.
