New findings, however, suggest that during the biggest solar storms, that protection may not taper off as researchers once believed.<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s happening?<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">According to <a data-ylk=\"slk:The Brighter Side of News;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;link&quot;,&quot;yLinkElementType&quot;:&quot;article_link&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thebrighterside.news\/post\/scientists-discover-solar-storms-could-hit-earth-much-harder-than-previously-thought\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">The Brighter Side of News<\/a>, scientists are challenging the concept of &#8220;geomagnetic saturation,&#8221; the idea that Earth&#8217;s magnetic defense eventually reaches a ceiling even as a geomagnetic storm continues to intensify.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The outlet reported <a data-ylk=\"slk:the paper;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;link&quot;,&quot;yLinkElementType&quot;:&quot;article_link&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-026-10757-4\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">the paper<\/a> was led by Dr. Nithin Sivadas of NASA&#8217;s Goddard Space Flight Center, with Dr. Maria Walach of Lancaster University as co-author. Their argument is that the supposed limit of Earth&#8217;s magnetic defenses may stem from how the solar wind is measured rather than from a true physical ceiling.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The Brighter Side reported that, for decades, scientists have relied heavily on solar wind measurements from spacecraft positioned at L1, or the first Lagrange point \u2014 a location roughly 1 million miles from Earth toward the Sun.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">A key issue is that solar wind conditions can shift between L1 and Earth, and the travel-time estimates are not perfectly precise. The researchers say that the difference can make the solar wind appear more intense than the version that actually reaches Earth&#8217;s magnetic environment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">If so, the apparent leveling-off in Earth&#8217;s response would be a statistical mirage rather than evidence of a real cap, the outlet reported.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">To investigate, The Brighter Side reported the team used statistical modeling on a quarter-century of data, from 1995 to 2019, including more than 1 million near-Earth solar wind measurements. Their results showed that currents in the upper atmosphere continued to increase as the solar wind strengthened.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">After correcting for uncertainty they estimated at at least 30%, the familiar curved &#8220;saturation&#8221; pattern became nearly linear.<\/p>\n<p>Why does it matter?<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The consequences extend well beyond theory: severe geomagnetic disturbances can affect satellites, GPS, radio communications, aviation, and power systems.
