THERE ARE CALLS to introduce anti-drag technology on Dublin\u2019s Luas network after passengers have become trapped in tram doors and dragged along the platforms.\u00a0<\/p>\n
In one case at Stillorgan in May, a teenager\u2019s coat was trapped as a tram departed. She ran alongside the tram before falling on her face, and was taken to hospital with deep lacerations on her face and grazes to her knees and hands.<\/p>\n
In another incident, a dog owner was dragged along the platform after the animal boarded and the lead became trapped in the door; while in a separate case, someone\u2019s fingers were trapped in the tram\u2019s doors with a passenger onboard pushing their fingers out from inside the tram.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The final case saw a bag placed between the doors of the tram with two passengers running alongside the tram holding onto the bag before it stopped.<\/p>\n
The Railway Accident Investigation Unit (RAIU) said all four obstructions were less than 10mm, meaning the doors could close and lock without detecting them.<\/p>\n
While doors would not be able to close if set at 0mm, there is currently no other advanced technology fitted to prevent what it describes as \u201ctrap-and-drag incidents\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n
