{"id":640004,"date":"2026-08-16T10:56:12","date_gmt":"2026-08-16T10:56:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/640004\/"},"modified":"2026-08-16T10:56:12","modified_gmt":"2026-08-16T10:56:12","slug":"multiple-people-killed-after-car-driving-wrong-way-on-m9-hits-second-car-in-3am-crash","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/640004\/","title":{"rendered":"Multiple people killed after car driving wrong way on M9 hits second car in 3am crash"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MULTIPLE PEOPLE HAVE been killed in a road traffic collision on the M9.<\/p>\n<p>Garda\u00ed said they are investigating \u201call the circumstances of a fatal road traffic collision\u201d that occurred on the M9 Northbound at Junction 3 in the early hours of Sunday morning.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Garda\u00ed and emergency services were alerted to a vehicle travelling southbound on the northbound carriageway of the M9 near Moone in Co Kildare.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe vehicle was driving on the M9 between junction 3 and 4, when a head-on collision occurred with a second car,\u201d a garda spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA number of fatalities have occurred and no further details are available at this time.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It is understood there were four people in the car that was going in the wrong direction.<\/p>\n<p>It is believed the car was being pursued by garda\u00ed who were investigating an incident in the area.<\/p>\n<p>The female driver and front passenger in the second car, both aged in her 30s, were taken to Tallaght University Hospital. Both were in critical condition.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A female rear seat passenger, aged in her 20s was taken to St Luke\u2019s General Hospital and is in a serious condition.<\/p>\n<p>The third passenger, a child, was taken to Children\u2019s Health Ireland (CHI) at Crumlin and is in a serious condition.<\/p>\n<p>The collision has been referred by An Garda S\u00edoch\u00e1na to Fiosr\u00fa, the police ombudsman.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of Fiosr\u00fa\u2019s on call team of investigators attended the scene and its independent investigation is ongoing,\u201d a spokesperson for Fiosr\u00fa said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFiosr\u00fa\u2019s investigation relates to incidents involving contact with garda\u00ed where a member of the public has died or been seriously injured,\u201d they said, adding that a referral \u201cdoes not necessarily mean a garda or garda\u00ed have been accused of wrongdoing\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInstead, it means that Fiosr\u00fa should independently investigate the incident to ascertain whether or not the act or omission of a garda or garda\u00ed may have resulted in the death of, or serious harm to, a person.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The section of the M9 from Junction 3 to Junction 4 northbound and southbound has been closed and local diversions are in place.<\/p>\n<p>A forensic collision examination will take place in due course, the spokesperson said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Garda\u00ed are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed this collision to come forward.<\/p>\n<p>Road users who were travelling on the M9 northbound or southbound between 2am and 3am this morning Sunday 16 August 2026 and who may have dashcam footage of the incident or surrounding area to make this footage available to investigating garda\u00ed.<\/p>\n<p>Anyone with information is asked to contact Athy Garda Station on 01 666 6000, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any garda station.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"MULTIPLE PEOPLE HAVE been killed in a road traffic collision on the M9.
