Lewis Capaldi<\/a> made a self-deprecating nod to a Florence Welch lyric while onstage at\u00a0Sziget Festival<\/a> \u2013 check out footage below.<\/p>\n

The Scottish singer was appearing on the festival\u2019s main stage in Budapest, Hungary on Thursday (August 13), where he performed immediately before headliners Florence + the Machine<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cIs everyone looking forward to Florence + The Machine,\u201d he asked the crowd to cheers, before launching into one of the most searing lines from the \u2018Everybody Scream\u2019 track \u2018One of the Greats\u2019: \u201cMust be nice to be a man, and make boring music just because you can\u201d.<\/p>\n

After chuckling and pointing to himself, he said: \u201cI was listening to that, and I was thinking, \u2018Oh fuck, yeah.’\u201d\u00a0Welch has previously said the track, which Aaron Dessner<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0The National<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Big Red Machine<\/a> also worked on, was a \u201c15-year outpouring of frustration\u201d after being \u201cridiculed and derided for the bigness of [her] expression\u201d earlier in her career.<\/p>\n

The track was named as one of\u00a0NME\u2018s 50 Best Songs of 2025<\/a>. In at Number 15, the entry read: \u201cFlorence Welch has made an art out of fusing the mythic with the searingly personal. Over six sprawling minutes, she manages to interrogate her place as \u2018One Of The Greats\u2019 with the same wit and swagger that solidifies it.\u201d<\/p>\n

NME\u2019s Jordan Bassett went along to see Welch\u2019s set at Sziget<\/a>, which was described as \u201cwhat it might look like if Ari Aster directed a concert\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs her backing singers and dancers \u2013 clad in gothic gowns like they\u2019d wandered in from a production of The Crucible \u2013 huddled together, Florence twirled around the stage, her blood-dress flailing dramatically,\u201d the review read. \u201cIt\u2019s a good job she didn\u2019t play during the previous night\u2019s solar eclipse, because we almost certainly would have all been turned into frogs.<\/p>\n

\u201cDancing out to her own stage at the end of a runway, Florence was the grand master and high priestess of proceedings, in absolute control and with tens of thousands of bewitched punters under her spell.\u201d<\/p>\n

Welch previously revealed that the inspiration for the \u2018Everybody Scream\u2019 album<\/a>\u00a0came from\u00a0undergoing lifesaving surgery during the \u2018Dance Fever\u2019 tour in 2023<\/a>.<\/p>\n

She has since opened up further about the procedure,\u00a0revealing that she had suffered an ectopic pregnancy<\/a>.\u00a0\u201cThe closest I came to making life was the closest I came to death,\u201d Welch explained in a recent interview. \u201cAnd I felt like I had stepped through this door, and it was just full of women, screaming.\u201d<\/p>\n

Around that same time, Welch had said that\u00a0exploring spiritual mysticism and folk horror helped inspire the album<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 understanding the limits of her body and questioning what it meant to be \u201chealed\u201d. Other themes tackled include the exploration of womanhood, partnership, ageing and dying.<\/p>\n

NME\u00a0gave the record a full\u00a0<\/a>five stars, with Laura Molloy writing: \u201cThere\u2019s no easy, radio-friendly hit here, nor a euphoric finale, with the album instead departing on a small exhale. \u2018The gift of going through something awful is that you can embrace someone who\u2019s been through it too,\u2019 Welch said in a recent interview<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAlbum closer \u2018And Love\u2019, then, is her final embrace, fluttering away in a haze of classic Florence + The Machine harp and distant murmurs of \u201cpeace is coming\u201d. It\u2019s a succinct and surprising end to a tempestuous record, one that stays with you longer than the rage and anguish which, here, is as fleeting, yet deeply magical, as the changing seasons.\u201d<\/p>\n

As for Capaldi, the recent Sziget slot saw him confirm plans for a third album<\/a>, which would mark the follow-up to 2019\u2019s \u2018Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent\u2019<\/a>\u00a0and 2023\u2019s\u00a0\u2018Broken By Desire To Be Heavenly Sent\u2019<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThank you for continuously showing up and watching us when we come to this festival \u2013 it really means the world,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m gonna go away after\u2026 We\u2019ve got six more gigs this summer, and then I\u2019m gonna go away and make a new album for everybody \u2013 if everybody\u2019s interested?\u201d<\/p>\n

When this was received with a cheer, he continued: \u201cI promise I\u2019ll be back as soon as I possibly fucking can be.\u201d<\/p>\n
