Just before the weekend, we learned the\u00a0Power Rangers\u00a0series<\/a> intended for Disney+ wouldn\u2019t be moving forward. The primary reason for this boiled down to budget, since Disney would\u2019ve been on the hook to pay for all of it.<\/p>\n

That news, plus the recent end to Wonder Man<\/a>,\u00a0has spawned conversations about Disney+\u2019s original programming moving forward, particularly when it comes to live action. According to a Collider<\/a>\u00a0report, Disney will be \u201cprioritizing animation\u201d when it comes to future series built around its two biggest IPs, Star Wars\u00a0and Marvel.<\/p>\n

Collider notes Star Wars\u00a0seemingly doesn\u2019t have any live-action shows planned after\u00a0Ahsoka\u00a0season two<\/a> (and presumably a fourth season of The Mandalorian), and the same may be true for Marvel after Daredevil: Born Again<\/a>\u00a0returns for season three in 2027.<\/p>\n

Animation is cheaper to make compared to live-action shows, or at least the live-action ones for\u00a0Star Wars\u00a0and Marvel. Both\u00a0The Acolyte<\/a>\u00a0and the full run of\u00a0<\/a>Andor<\/a>\u00a0were reportedly pretty costly to make, and various Marvel shows also had to be, given the effects that eventually go into them.<\/p>\n

If Collider\u2019s correct about Disney\u2019s framing, it\u2019d also help explain Marvel\u2019s silence on TV at SDCC last month. Compared to live-action, both franchises\u2019 futures are slightly clearer in animation: Maul\u2014Shadow Lord<\/a>\u00a0is already locked in for season two, and\u00a0Star Wars Visions Presents<\/a>\u00a0will continue adapting episodes from that anthology. Marvel has already greenlit X-Men \u201997\u00a0and\u00a0<\/a>Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man<\/a>\u00a0for more seasons each.<\/p>\n
