She later welcomed her daughter Zara, 5, while a member of parliament.

It is the experience in the weeks after Benjamin’s birth that has driven a passion for postpartum health care amid fears Australian women are currently “suffering in silence”.

“I was really lucky in that I absolutely loved giving birth,” Senator Smith said.

Marielle Smith was elected when her son was just an infant. difficulty attempting to breastfeed, due to constant and recurring mastitis, injury and latching problems.

“It was unbearable, unbearable pain,” she said.

“I wanted to breastfeed my baby so badly, but it was excruciating.

“Holding a baby I wanted to nourish so badly, who needed me, and just feeling like a complete failure.”

Support came down to ‘luck’

Senator Smith said this led to a diagnosis of postnatal anxiety.

“I remember thinking at the time, ‘Why didn’t anyone warn me about this?'”

Senator Smith said she was “really fortunate” that over six weeks she was able to seek out support from a lactation consultant and was ultimately able to breastfeed Benjamin.

“But if I hadn’t been able to get her help, I honestly don’t know how I would have coped and don’t know how long I would have been stuck in that dark place I had found myself in,”

 she said.

Senator Smith attributes her experience with healthcare to the “luck” of living in a capital city like Adelaide and the ability to afford the almost $1,000 cost of the support, something she is aware not every parent has.

“I just don’t accept that in a country like Australia, good quality postpartum healthcare should be a matter of what you can and cannot afford, it shouldn’t be a matter of where you live and it absolutely shouldn’t rely on luck or chance,” she said.

“If we believe that every baby matters, every mother matters, every parent matters, and all of them deserve to be able to access quality support and we know that too many aren’t.”

Birth injuries cost economy billions

Senator Smith said when a woman was going through a mental or physical health issue post birth it could be hard for them to even leave the house, let alone seek a GP appointment or specialist.

Survey finds delay in childbirth injury diagnosis impacts mental health

A survey of nearly 400 women around Australia found a delay in diagnosing birth injuries is leading to more severe mental health issues.

“So I think as we go through this committee and we look at the policy solutions, we also need to be cognisant that we need to reach women where they are,” she said.

Senator Smith said there was also a sense of “guilt and shame” in seeking help because women felt they were “failing the most important thing to you”.

“I want to make sure that women don’t feel like that,” she said.

“Part of that means telling our stories, and that breaks down stigma and I’m hoping women around the country will come and share their story with our committee, and that’s why I’m happy to share some of my story as well.”

Birth injuries and ongoing conditions in Australia had a $17.5 billion economic impact in 2023-24, according to a report released by Birth Trauma Australia in June.

Analysis found the impacts were far-reaching for women, starting with acute physical and mental health issues after birth through to loss of career opportunities, financial insecurity and even early entry into aged care.

For families and partners the impacts included relationship challenges and career disruption, while wider society suffered a workforce gender gap, lower birth rates and higher welfare burden.

The report found a third of women described their birth as physically or mentally traumatic, while about 18 per cent of Australians — or about 1.1 million people — who have had a baby are now living with injuries and ongoing conditions.

Hopes inquiry can break down ‘stigma’

Senator Smith said she would look to make recommendations at the end of the inquiry to inform both Commonwealth and state and territory health services for women.

“I think everyone who has been privileged enough to experience the life-changing event of becoming a parent knows there’s absolutely nothing more miraculous or amazing,” she said.

“But it can also be incredibly isolating. It can be incredibly lonely, and for many women, it can be painful, scary and it can be traumatic.

“We know that too many women find themselves in the darkest of places, and we cannot leave them alone there.”

Free mental health support for new parents

New parents often struggle in silence, but a growing number of perinatal clinics offering free mental health support are being rolled out across Australia.

Senator Smith said the “stigma” around women’s health can compound the impact, an issue that she has already pursued through a similar inquiry last term examining menopause and reproductive health.

That piece of work helped inform a $792.9 million women’s health package funded by Labor, which included the addition of new menopausal hormone therapies to the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme, expanded Medicare rebates and the services offered at pelvic pain clinics.

“I believe in politics with purpose,” Senator Smith said.

“I believe in the power of public policy to transform lives for the better, and the Senate has a really strong potential to elevate lived experience, to do that detailed policy work and to help in driving change.”

As Marielle Smith gave birth to her son she felt like a “warrior” and marvelled at the “life-changing”…

[275
16044,28924,18,135,475,474,19,116529,17,270954,167,9468,174339,54171,12000
post-640646","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-healthcare","tag-adelaide","tag-breastfeeding","tag-eire","tag-health","tag-health-care","tag-healthcare","tag-ie","tag-inquiry","tag-ireland","tag-marielle-smith","tag-mental-health","tag-postpartum","tag-postpartum-anxiety","tag-south-australia","tag-womens-health
["GET
