(Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">&#8220;If you surprise a bear, especially one with cubs or on a food cache, it may react in a threatened or defensive manner,&#8221; the department said. &#8220;The bear may be agitated and may huff, stomp, make a popping sound with its teeth, salivate or lay its ears back against its head and charge.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">They urged staying calm, standing your ground, readying deterrent, staying in a group and talking calmly. Never run.<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">&#8220;If the bear is stationary, move away slowly while keeping your eyes on the bear,&#8221; the department said. &#8220;If the bear starts to move toward you or charges, stop and stand your ground. Let the bear know you are not a threat. Behaving calmly, moving slowly, and speaking in a low calm voice will help de-escalate the situation. (LightRocket via Getty Images, File)<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">The July victim was walking with a friend and her <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fnc_us_article_main-content_article-body_6_14638948\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/world\/woman-stalked-charging-bear-morning-dog-walk-captures-terrifying-encounter-camera\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">three dogs<\/a> in the Bear Valley residential neighborhood, adjacent to <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fnc_us_article_main-content_article-body_6_14638949\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/us\/environment\/parks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Chugach State Park<\/a> in south Anchorage, when the bear approached.<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">Officials said the hikers were on an <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fnc_us_article_main-content_article-body_6_14638950\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/media\/terrified-hikers-face-nightmare-survival-scenario-after-heart-pounding-grizzly-bear-encounter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">unofficial, user-made trail<\/a> that climbs a steep hillside in a zigzag pattern.
