{"id":64115,"date":"2025-09-14T20:27:12","date_gmt":"2025-09-14T20:27:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/64115\/"},"modified":"2025-09-14T20:27:12","modified_gmt":"2025-09-14T20:27:12","slug":"pope-leo-reveals-he-was-assaulted-during-visit-to-ireland-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/64115\/","title":{"rendered":"Pope Leo reveals he was assaulted during visit to Ireland"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"\">James Cox<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Pope Leo has revealed he was physically assaulted during a visit to Ireland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">In a recently resurfaced video from 2019, he detailed how a person set upon him in the street after saying &#8220;you&#8217;re a priest&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Addressing a conference in Peru, the then-bishop referenced how attitudes to Catholicism have dramatically changed, especially in Ireland since the clerical abuse scandal broke in the 1990s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cNever in my life, anywhere in the world, have I been physically attacked as I was in Ireland, for just going out on the street.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cA man passes by, he looks at me [and says] \u2018you\u2019re a priest\u2019 \u2013 and he starts attacking me. Fortunately, another Augustinian, who is twice as big as me, came to defend me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">He added: &#8220;\u201cI don\u2019t know if he was a victim or had lost faith in the church, I have no idea what happened to him. But I truly believe it is a very important factor in the experience here in the church as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">It is unclear when the attack took place, but Pope Leo is known to have visited Ireland twice, in 2005 and 2007.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"James Cox Pope Leo has revealed he was physically assaulted during a visit to Ireland.
