{"id":641446,"date":"2026-08-17T08:33:30","date_gmt":"2026-08-17T08:33:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/641446\/"},"modified":"2026-08-17T08:33:30","modified_gmt":"2026-08-17T08:33:30","slug":"race-begins-to-vaccinate-phillip-islands-famous-little-penguin-colony","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/641446\/","title":{"rendered":"Race begins to vaccinate Phillip Island&#8217;s famous little penguin colony"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Victorian wildlife officers will spend the coming weeks catching and vaccinating penguins against the devastating strain of bird flu spreading through Australia, in a mammoth effort said to be unprecedented in its scale.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It is a race to save a world-famous penguin colony from a worst-case prediction that the H5 bird flu strain could kill thousands of birds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But the time-critical program was dealt a significant blow over the weekend, with confirmation the virus had killed a little penguin days before the vaccine rollout got underway.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Here is what is at stake, and what else we know.<\/p>\n<p>What is special about the penguins?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The world&#8217;s smallest penguin species, little penguins have been the focus of significant conservation efforts that saw their Phillip Island colony grow to one of the largest in the world.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Today, the birds&#8217; nightly return to the island south-east of Melbourne is a major ecotourism drawcard for tourists from near and far.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">More than 700,000 people travelled to watch the birds hobble up the coastline and to their burrows last year, with millions pumped into the economy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">A smaller colony in St Kilda stars in a similar show that regularly books out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The Phillip Island penguin parade is something like 40 per cent of our business turnover,&#8221; private tour operator John Stapleton said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;People come to Victoria especially to see the Phillip Island penguins.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Tourism operator John Stapleton stands near the St Kilda pier.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/13b70b3738d0033db8d93d2de59907e8.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">John Stapleton runs private tours to the Phillip Island penguin parade. (ABC News: Darryl Torpy)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">A May 2025 research paper produced by the state government modelled the threat that H5N1 posed to the 40,000-bird Phillip Island colony, and the tourism economy that relies on it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It warned that between 8,000 and 16,000 of the penguins could be killed under a worst-case scenario.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The penguins are at special risk of spreading bird flu because they nest and congregate in groups.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>How do you vaccinate a penguin?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/science\/2026-08-12\/phillip-island-penguins-to-be-rounded-up-for-bird-flu-vaccine\/107025662\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/107025662\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">vaccination program unveiled last week<\/a> \u2014 and beginning today \u2014 is unique because of its focus on wild animals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">With a target of more than 5,000 vaccinated penguins across St Kilda and Phillip Island, Victorian officials say the scale is unprecedented for wildlife.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;One of the challenges of vaccinating wild animals is they need two doses,&#8221; \u00a0Victoria&#8217;s chief biodiversity officer James Todd said on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;In most cases, that&#8217;s impractical and likely impossible for wild animals.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Two penguins walking along a track\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/47b240014415bcb2f2e2f45acb8a0f88.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The Phillip Island penguin colony has up to 40,000 birds. (Supplied: Phillip Island Nature Parks)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Experts have also warned that vaccination is not a silver bullet, but a targeted tool that can reduce the impact of the virus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Gough urged governments to invest more in mitigating other threats that could increase stress for affected animals.<\/p>\n<p>What happens next?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Victoria&#8217;s Premier Ben Carroll on Sunday said he had been in regular contact with wildlife officials and would meet them again today.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We are fast-tracking our vaccination process,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;This is very concerning, what&#8217;s occurred with the penguins.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-05-18\/antarctica-avian-flu-h5n1-evolution-pandemic-potential\/105271154\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">&#8216;Unprecedented and alarming&#8217;: Bird flu has morphed to wipe out seals<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Australia is surrounded by the deadly H5N1 strain of bird flu.
