The more dangerous the driving, the most attention and likes the videos seem to get.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Gangs of teens and young men from across the country are competing as they perform almost identical crimes, often inspired by each other. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">These videos usually follow the same format. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A video starting at the back of the car, with a gloved hand covering the rear registration plate, the cameraman walking to the front of the car and zooming in to show the mangled ignition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mostly these thefts are not sophisticated operations; instead they use simple tools \u2013 the car thieves are pulling apart the ignitions of target car brands and hot-wiring the vehicles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">At times, the users give away too much, with young faces spotted in the cars. Sometimes their search histories reveal they were researching how to steal cars.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">One of the five teenagers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/crime-law\/2026\/08\/17\/five-teenagers-killed-in-m9-wrong-way-crash-are-named-locally\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/crime-law\/2026\/08\/17\/five-teenagers-killed-in-m9-wrong-way-crash-are-named-locally\/\">killed in the two-car collision on the M9<\/a> motorway near Moone, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/kildare\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/kildare\">Co Kildare<\/a>, in the early hours of Sunday had posted some time previously a video showing he had carried out a TikTok search with the words: \u201cHow to graft Honda Aquas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2026\/08\/17\/m9-crash-minister-for-justice-condemns-outrageously-dangerous-criminal-behaviour\/\">M9 crash: Minister for Justice condemns \u2018outrageously dangerous criminal behaviour\u2019<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The five were killed when the stolen BMW they were in collided head-on with another car after they drove the wrong way down the northbound carriageway of the M9. Three woman and a child were seriously injured in the other vehicle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cJapanese imports\u201d are the go-to vehicles, due to differences in regulations in Japan where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/european-union\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/european-union\/\">EU<\/a>-standard immobilisers in most cars in Ireland are not required to be fitted. Some of the most frequently stolen vehicles are the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/toyota\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/toyota\">Toyota<\/a> Aqua, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/nissan\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/nissan\/\">Nissan<\/a> March and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/honda\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/honda\">Honda<\/a> Fit, which are common and easy to steal. \u201cJapanese imports\u201d differ, though, from similar cars made in Japan specifically for the EU market.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">On the TikTok video, the footage often then cuts to videos of the speedometer, with the stolen vehicle significantly exceeding the speed limit. The camera pans through the car, filled with youths who usually have their faces hidden.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Some of the more sophisticated groups have devices capable of intercepting the signal from keyless or proximity keys, a Garda source said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">These keys send signals to the car on the location of the key, thieves can use electronic devices to intercept these signals from the key fob to trick the car into thinking the car is nearby.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">This even works when the key is near the front door inside a house, a source said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Other times they film themselves breaking the front windows of homes to grab keys hanging beside the front door, video evidence shows.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/2026\/08\/17\/wrong-way-motorway-driving-young-men-chase-social-media-likes-and-exploit-garda-rules\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Wrong-way motorway driving: M9 crash is latest incident as young men chase social media \u2018likes\u2019Opens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The tools being used in the thefts change from social media post to post, but the one constant is that everyone, including the driver, seems to have their mobile phones out and is recording.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Profit is not a motive in many of these thefts, the cars are usually dumped \u2013 badly damaged \u2013 after the thieves\u2019 joyride.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The point of these videos is to gain internet \u201cclout\u201d \u2013 a slang term meaning fame, social influence and attention.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Those whose cars are stolen may put posts on local Facebook groups, appealing for information about their stolen cars. Screenshots of these posts are then placed at the start of photo reels in which the teens are bragging about their thefts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">While everyone is \u201cstruggling to understand\u201d how people could take such \u201chorrible risks\u201d as this, cyber-psychologist Mary Aiken said the answer lay in cyber behavioural science.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWhile they are engaging in this high-risk behaviour, they are generating extreme content. That content is either being live streamed or being posted on social media. They get kudos for that content and they get likes,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The videoing for social media creates a disconnect from reality for the teens.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In psychology, this is called the online disinhibition effect (ODE). Aiken said: \u201cEffectively, they are, psychologically, not really in a real-world environment. They are lost in cyberspace, thinking about all of the upside; the likes and reposts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She said she was also concerned that access to violent content at a young age had distorted perceptions of consequences and that there was a lack of enforcement and policy to address the behaviour.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Aiken pointed to the rapid sharing of this extreme content being enabled on social media and the glorification it received online. These social media platforms had a \u201cresponsibility\u201d, she said.<\/p>\n<p>Garda baiting<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Many videos on social media show the vehicles approaching Garda cars, slowing down to get their attention, which some commenters described as \u201cbaiting\u201d the garda\u00ed to chase the vehicle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">As they speed off, the Garda are faced with the choice as to whether they should chase the drivers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Last week, a Garda source said it appeared some thieves had realised that dangerous driving practices could result in garda\u00ed being forced to abandon chases.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Even the few garda\u00ed who are sufficiently trained to engage in high-risk pursuits are dissuaded from doing so due to the elevated risk to the public.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The prospect of personal convictions for dangerous driving are another factor leading to some garda\u00ed making the understandable decision not to chase.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">From the perspective of frontline garda\u00ed, John Joe O\u2019Connell, vice-president of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/garda-representative-association\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/garda-representative-association\">Garda Representative Association<\/a>, said garda\u00ed had to make \u201ca split-second decision\u201d and were \u201ckind of damned if you do, and damned if you don\u2019t\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He said there was a rising trend of joyriding videos being posted to social media, but garda\u00ed did not have recognised \u201cpursuit training\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Many garda\u00ed, it is understood, are on the first level of the force\u2019s competency-based driving programme, which does not permit them to activate blue lights or their sirens.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Those behind the wheels of squad cars point to the criminal charges and trials facing some colleagues in responding to emergencies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWhat would you do?\u201d one garda asked The Irish Times. \u201cIt\u2019s your licence on the line, your good name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Garda\u00ed point to the UK, where in 2018 new laws took into account the specialised training given to UK police when examining their driving conduct in chases.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Recently there have been re-examinations of those laws when it comes to chases of under-18s on e-scooters and e-bikes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/sean-canney\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/sean-canney\/\">Se\u00e1n Canney<\/a>, Minister of State at the Department of Transport, said the Government was preparing legislation to protect garda\u00ed when they are pursuing vehicles being driven dangerously.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">For garda\u00ed that cannot come soon enough.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Videos of teenagers joyriding in stolen cars are posted to TikTok almost daily.
