Donald Trump\u2019s<\/a> approval rating fell to \u200bthe lowest level of his presidency with an overwhelming majority of Americans concerned the United States\u2019<\/a> war with Iran<\/a> will last a long time, according to a Reuters\/Ipsos poll that concluded on Monday. <\/p>\n

Just 33 per cent of respondents in \u200bthe four-day survey said they approved of the US president\u2019s performance in the White House, while 64 per cent disapproved. <\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s approval rating, \u2060down from 35 per cent in a poll that closed earlier this month and lower \u200cthan \u200cat \u200bany point in his current term, has now a tie with the lowest level of his first term reached in December 2017. <\/p>\n

After returning to the \u2060White House last year with \u200bjust under half the country approving of his \u200bpresidency, Trump\u2019s popularity this year took a hit after he ordered strikes on Iran alongside US \u200cally Israel<\/a>. <\/p>\n

The ensuing conflict has paralysed \u200ba fifth of the global oil trade, triggering a surge in the price of \u2060petrol which is weighing on US households \u2013 \u2060and on Trump\u2019s \u200bRepublican allies defending congressional majorities in November midterm elections.<\/p>\n

Trump, who campaigned on promises to keep inflation in check and avoid long-lasting wars, initially pledged the conflict with Iran would take a few weeks. He has argued the war was the only way to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon that could threaten the world.<\/p>\n

But Iran has proved resilient and has kept the oil trade through the Strait of \u200cHormuz<\/a> largely bottled up \u2060even as the conflict has cooled. <\/p>\n

About 80 per cent of Americans \u2013 including 87 per cent of Democrats and 71 per cent of Republicans \u2013 think US involvement in Iran \u201cwill go on for an extended \u200cperiod of time,\u201d the Reuters\/Ipsos poll found. <\/p>\n

Just 16 per cent said the conflict would likely end in a few \u200bweeks. <\/p>\n
