{"id":642641,"date":"2026-08-17T23:58:18","date_gmt":"2026-08-17T23:58:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/642641\/"},"modified":"2026-08-17T23:58:18","modified_gmt":"2026-08-17T23:58:18","slug":"photographers-flock-to-la-jolla-for-return-of-scrippshenge-san-diego-union-tribune","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/642641\/","title":{"rendered":"Photographers flock to La Jolla for return of \u2018Scrippshenge\u2019 \u2013 San Diego Union-Tribune"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dozens of sunset photographers gathered under the Scripps Pier in La Jolla on Aug. 9 for a twice-a-year phenomenon known as \u201cScripphenge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Named for a similar occurrence at Stonehenge in the United Kingdom, Scrippshenge occurs when the sun sets directly between the back pillars of the 300-meter Scripps Pier. The first Scrippshenge of the year took place on May 2.<\/p>\n<p>The reason for this occurrence, said Scripps Institution of Oceanography geoscientist James Day, is because the planet is tilting on its axis.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/DXuPa2wkbhT\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">he explained<\/a>, \u201cDuring the summer here in the northern hemisphere, its (axis is) pointing towards the sun and in the winter, it\u2019s pointing away.
