WITNESSES HAVE RECALLED the night rapper Tupac Shakur was shot as the trial of the man accused of orchestrating the killing opened in Las Vegas.<\/p>\n
Duane \u201cKeffe D\u201d Davis (63) could get life in prison if he is convicted of murder with a deadly weapon with the intent to promote, further or assist a criminal gang.<\/p>\n
He has pleaded not guilty and his lawyer in the defence opening called the prosecution\u2019s narrative \u201cfiction\u201d.<\/p>\n
On the opening day of the trial, Ingrid Stokes testified that she and her friends were heading home from Las Vegas when they encountered the rapper and Marion \u201cSuge\u201d Knight, who were friends with a woman in Ms Stokes\u2019 group.<\/p>\n
Mr Knight invited them to a nightclub, she said, and they decided to meet them there.<\/p>\n
The car Ms Stokes was riding in was one lane over and a car length ahead of Mr Knight\u2019s vehicle when they heard gunshots.<\/p>\n
Ms Stokes said they drove off in fear and almost hit a white four-door vehicle in the process.<\/p>\n
When they returned to the scene, police made them sit on the pavement and treated them like suspects, she said.<\/p>\n

Ms Stokes was scared to be seen in public talking about the case, worried about poor treatment from law enforcement and the potential for retribution.<\/p>\n
\u201cSnitches get stitches,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Shakur remains a cultural icon and is considered one of the most influential and versatile rappers of all time, despite dying at 25.<\/p>\n
\u201cLet\u2019s be clear, Duane Davis did not pull the trigger. But he did plan the shooting in retaliation of the beating of his nephew,\u201d chief deputy district attorney Binu Palal told jurors at the start of Davis\u2019 Las Vegas trial.<\/p>\n
\u201cRemarkably, you will learn that from Duane Davis himself.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mr Palal showed jurors video of Shakur\u2019s entourage attacking Davis\u2019 nephew Orlando \u201cBaby Lane\u201d Anderson outside the boxing match at the MGM Grand hours before the shooting on 7 September 1996.<\/p>\n
Davis spent the next two hours planning how to get even, said Mr Palal, and Shakur was gunned down \u201cin an act of revenge\u201d.<\/p>\n
In a 2008 interview with a federal task force investigating the killing of Shakur\u2019s rival, the Notorious B.I.G, Davis instead talked about the Shakur shooting.<\/p>\n
He described handing a gun to the men in the backseat of a white Cadillac that fired on a black BMW with Shakur and Mr Knight inside.<\/p>\n
As prosecutors played audio of Davis explaining the moment Shakur was shot, members of Shakur\u2019s family, including his stepbrother Maurice \u201cMopreme\u201d Shakur, stared ahead and listened intently from the audience.<\/p>\n
Mr Palal told jurors Davis held onto a visceral hatred for Shakur for decades that drove him to speak.<\/p>\n
He said the defendant talked to the FBI in 1998 and again in 1999, admitting he had been in Las Vegas at the time of the shooting.<\/p>\n
In 2009, he admitted to his role in the killing in an interview with Las Vegas police, Mr Palal said.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd now 30 years later, we\u2019re going to ask you to finally hold Duane Davis accountable,\u201d Mr Palal said.<\/p>\n
He also showed jurors the 2019 memoir that Davis co-authored, Compton Street Legend, that the prosecution will use and that the defence fought to keep out of the trial, along with several of the defendant\u2019s interviews.<\/p>\n
Davis, wearing a blue suit and tie, sat quietly with his hands folded on the table in front of him, occasionally nodding along as his lawyer Michael Sanft gave his opening, and often scanned the room during testimony to see who was in the gallery.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat they are telling you, they are representing as fact, when it\u2019s really fiction,\u201d Mr Sanft said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s no facts.\u201d<\/p>\n
He said Davis was not previously charged because law enforcement knew that he was \u201cfull of crap\u201d.<\/p>\n
The defence lawyer also pointed to missing documents in the original investigation and distrust between police departments.<\/p>\n
He called one detective\u2019s work \u201cbiased,\u201d \u201csloppy\u201d and \u201cincomplete\u201d.<\/p>\n
Former Los Angeles Police Department detective Fred Miller \u2014 assigned to the investigation of the 1997 shooting death of the Notorious B.I.G, born Christopher Wallace \u2014 testified remotely and said that Davis had briefly been suspected in that shooting.<\/p>\n
Davis admitted to being present at a party at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles where Wallace and Sean \u201cDiddy\u201d Combs were guests.<\/p>\n
Wallace was shot as he was leaving.<\/p>\n
Mr Sanft objected to the inclusion of the testimony.<\/p>\n
The judge, with prosecutors\u2019 agreement, told jurors that police do not believe Davis was involved.<\/p>\n
The story of Shakur\u2019s drive-by shooting has long gripped the hip-hop community, partly because no one was charged until Davis was indicted in 2023.<\/p>\n
The other three men riding in the Cadillac have all died in the years since.<\/p>\n
Retired Las Vegas police officer Garry Dale was the first of the 35 to 45 witnesses the prosecution plans to call at the trial, expected to last about a month.<\/p>\n
He testified that he and another officer stopped Mr Knight and Shakur\u2019s car for missing a license plate, warned them and let them go.<\/p>\n
About 10 minutes later, the officers responded to a shooting call and found EMTs pulling Shakur from the car.<\/p>\n
Mr Dale said Mr Knight had been grazed by bullets, but told the officers to take care of Shakur.<\/p>\n
Mr Dale jumped in the ambulance and asked Shakur who shot him. The retired officer said that Shakur said something like \u201cno, we\u2019ll take care of it\u201d.<\/p>\n
Brent Becker, a former Las Vegas homicide detective, testified that Mr Knight showed up to a police interview with lawyers, which he thought was odd because Mr Knight was a victim.<\/p>\n
Mr Knight was timid, his interview was practised, and he told investigators he knew nothing, Mr Becker said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI thought he lied to us,\u201d Mr Becker said in video testimony.<\/p>\n
