WETHERSPOONS HAS BANNED customers from playing music out loud or taking calls on speakerphone.<\/p>\n
Wetherspoons has six pubs in the Republic of Ireland and three in the North.<\/p>\n
In a statement to The Journal, a Wetherspoons spokesperson said that it has \u201calways had a policy of not having music\u201d.<\/p>\n
While some Wetherspoons \u2013 trading as \u201cLloyds\u201d \u2013 have music at certain times, the majority don\u2019t allow music to be played to aid conversation, as well as to make savings on licensing costs. \u00a0<\/p>\n
However, the spokesperson said that \u201can increasing problem in recent years relates to smartphones and iPads, which are used for videos or telephone conversations\u201d.<\/p>\n
The spokesperson said that the pub chain has been receiving complaints from customers who are \u201cbeing driven nuts by other people\u2019s videos and amplified phone conversations\u201d.<\/p>\n
As a result, the spokesperson said \u201cWetherspoons has asked customers to switch their phones to silent or to use earphones\u201d.<\/p>\n
The spokesperson confirmed that this will apply to the Republic of Ireland.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Wetherspoon chairman and founder Tim Martin said: \u201cIn a world dominated by other people\u2019s music and amplified sound, Wetherspoon pubs are an oasis of tranquillity and contemplation.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn order to avoid customers being driven chicken jalfrezi by a cacophony of sound, we are kindly asking phone users to pipe down.\u201d<\/p>\n
In the UK, the Liberal Democrats have previously called for fines of up to \u00a31,000 for \u201cheadphone dodgers\u201d who play music out loud on buses and trains.<\/p>\n
A UK YouGov poll published in 2025 suggested 62% of people would back the move, with 28% saying they would oppose the Lib Dems\u2019 proposed fines.<\/p>\n
