{"id":643581,"date":"2026-08-18T13:03:12","date_gmt":"2026-08-18T13:03:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/643581\/"},"modified":"2026-08-18T13:03:12","modified_gmt":"2026-08-18T13:03:12","slug":"exports-to-the-us-continue-month-on-month-volatility-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/643581\/","title":{"rendered":"Exports to the US continue month-on-month volatility \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The value of Ireland\u2019s exports to the United States declined in June, as US president Donald Trump\u2019s tariffs on the European Union continues to strain economic relations on either side of the Atlantic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ireland exported \u20ac4.3 billion worth of goods to the US in June, according to provisional figures released on Tuesday by the Central Statistics Office (CSO). Although this is a \u20ac300 million decrease from the previous month, it still is the State\u2019s largest trading partner.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ireland\u2019s trading with the US has seen inconsistency throughout the year, with the value of exported goods peaking in April at \u20ac5.1 billion following a low of \u20ac3.5 billion in January.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Louise Kelly, Deloitte Ireland\u2019s global trade strategy and resilience leader, said these trade figures \u201care consistent with what we have seen in previous months\u201d and that \u201cthere is a pattern emerging.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She said the value of Irish exports in the first half of 2026 \u201care significantly down\u201d from the same time last year, although comparing the difference from 2025 \u201cis an ongoing challenge, due to the inflated figures from front-loading in light of US tariffs\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cHowever, a comparison with June 2024 points to a normalisation of our export figures after an extraordinary 2025 when global trade was totally transformed,\u201d Kelly said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Trump introduced sweeping and steep tariffs in 2025, with \u201ca uniform 15 per cent tariff\u201d applied \u201cto all EU exports to the US from 1 August 2025 \u2013 three times the previous average of nearly five per cent,\u201d according to DCU\u2019s Davide Genini.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">About \u20ac2.1 billion worth of goods were exported from Ireland to the United Kingdom, while exports across the 26 other EU member states amounted to \u20ac6.6 billion, according to data from the CSO. A further \u20ac3.9 billion worth of goods were exported to the rest of the world. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The value of imports from the US was notably lower than its exports \u2013 at \u20ac2.6 billion \u2013 while the trading balance was more equal with the UK, from which \u20ac2 billion worth of goods were imported in June. Ireland imported \u20ac3.7 billion worth of goods from the EU last month and \u20ac4.4 billion from the rest of the world. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Carol Lynch, the head of customs and international trade services at accountancy and business advisory firm BDO, said an increase in exports to the United Kingdom \u201cis a positive sign\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cSimilar patterns can be seen for exports to the rest of the world outside of the US, EU and GB.
