{"id":643655,"date":"2026-08-18T13:48:17","date_gmt":"2026-08-18T13:48:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/643655\/"},"modified":"2026-08-18T13:48:17","modified_gmt":"2026-08-18T13:48:17","slug":"cork-deputy-mayor-finbarr-harrington-handed-12-week-suspension-by-cork-gaa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/643655\/","title":{"rendered":"Cork deputy mayor Finbarr Harrington handed 12-week suspension by Cork GAA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Deputy Mayor of <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishexaminer.com\/maintopics\/cork-county-council_topic-5329616.html\">County Cork<\/a> and Garnish GAA chairman Finbarr Harrington has been suspended for 12 weeks following a misconduct hearing conducted by <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishexaminer.com\/maintopics\/cork-gaa_topic-5084534.html\">Cork GAA<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The sanction relates to a Junior B football championship fixture played on May 9.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Garnish had been hoping to take momentum from the game itself, but their narrow defeat to Castlelyons in Ballingeary \u2014 by a single point \u2014 compounded the disappointment around the incident.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">According to the Cork GAA County Board\u2019s latest progress report, the suspension was imposed under Rule 7.2(e), which covers misconduct \u201cconsidered to have discredited the Association\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The rule allows for more severe penalties \u2014 including debarment or expulsion \u2014 in certain circumstances.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Mr Harrington\u2019s 12-week ban is therefore four weeks above the minimum threshold set out in the rule.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu caption\">Deputy mayor role unaffected<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Mr Harrington took up the position of deputy mayor earlier this year as part of Cork County Council\u2019s annual rotation of mayoral roles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The post is largely ceremonial but includes representing the county at official functions, community events and civic engagements. His suspension from GAA activity does not affect his standing on the Council.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">A long-serving member of Garnish GAA, Mr Harrington has held several roles within the club over the years.
