Obsession has been streaming for a while now, given that most movies do not stay in theaters for a full three months without that happening. But it is still crawling along at the box office in various regions after all this time, and now, it will set a whole new record.<\/p>\n
As the most recent box office reporting is coming in, it seems Obsession will surpass<\/a> Pixar\u2019s Elemental as the biggest original film of the 2020s. Original in this case meaning not a sequel, not an adaptation, not a remake. You can see the overall list of the top 2020s box office earners to show just how prevalent that is:<\/p>\n So, eight sequels and two adaptations of existing properties (Barbie could be considered borderline original, I suppose). The rest of the list goes on for a long time until you get to Obsession and Elemental at $496 million, the latter just ticking over today after yesterday\u2019s take. It is also #3 on the list of the highest-grossing R-rated horror movies ever made, behind just It and The Conjuring: Last Rites.<\/p>\n Obsession was in the news this past week when its breakout star, Inde Navarrette, was announced<\/a> as playing Rogue in the upcoming MCU X-Men movie, a stunning turn of events going from an almost complete unknown to the star of a Marvel movie in just three months. Navarrette likely cheekily misled reporters when, after it was confirmed that she met with X-Men director Jake Schreier, she said that of any role, she\u2019d like to play Mystique. She was entirely outside the conversation about Cailee Spaeny and Odessa A\u2019Zion vying for the role of Rogue, and as of yet, it has not been confirmed Mystique is in the movie at all.<\/p>\n Obsession has broken so many records at this point that it\u2019s hard to keep track, but this is a big one.
