But if you\u2019re vegan or have a GI condition, you\u2019re at a greater risk of deficiency.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"14\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">Granted, B12 is tough to track unless you use an app that tallies milligrams and micrograms of specific vitamins and minerals.<\/p>\n<p>How Age Affects B12 Absorption<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"16\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\"><strong data-node-id=\"16.0\">IF YOU\u2019RE 50<\/strong> years or older, you may need a little more vitamin B12 than the general health guidance. That\u2019s because vitamin B12 absorption decreases with age because of changes in digestive tracts, says <a rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mycrohnsandcolitisteam.com\/writers\/683f0deb46c7aa1e0f3349e2\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.mycrohnsandcolitisteam.com\/writers\/683f0deb46c7aa1e0f3349e2\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Avery Zenker, RD\" data-node-id=\"16.2\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\">Avery Zenker, RD<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"17\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">\u201cVitamin B12 absorption requires adequate stomach acid, saliva, digestive enzymes, and other essential digestive components,\u201d she says. \u201cOlder adults are more likely to have impaired ability to digest food-bound vitamin B12.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"18\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">One <a rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10585793\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10585793\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"study\" data-node-id=\"18.1\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\">study<\/a> in people over 70 found 22 percent of guys were B12-deficient compared to 8 percent of women. Still, Zenker notes that vitamin B12 deficiency starts younger, as 10 to 30 percent of adults over 50 develop atrophic gastritis, inflammation in the stomach lining. Atrophic gastritis reduces stomach acid and digestive enzymes like pepsin, which normally helps with separating B12 from food proteins it\u2019s bound to so it can be absorbed.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"19\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">For this reason, Zenker says adults over 50 should continue eating fortified foods and consider a B12 supplement. It might sound counterintuitive that whole foods aren\u2019t the optimal source of B12, but it\u2019s a special exception when an older adult\u2019s digestive system cannot efficiently separate B12 bound to protein in food.<\/p>\n<p>What Foods Contain Vitamin B12?  <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"21\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\"><strong data-node-id=\"21.0\">IF YOU EAT<\/strong> animal products, St. Pierre advises aiming for four palm-sized portions a day. Beef, chicken, pork, eggs, and seafood are good sources. No, that doesn\u2019t make them healthy.<\/p>\n<p>What Are Symptoms of Vitamin B12 Deficiency? <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"25\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\"><strong data-node-id=\"25.0\">DEFICIENCY ISN\u2019T COMMON<\/strong>, but it can produce some scary side effects when it does happen. Lack of vitamin B12 can cause <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/23160-megaloblastic-anemia\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/23160-megaloblastic-anemia\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"megaloblastic anemia\" data-node-id=\"25.2\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">megaloblastic anemia<\/a>\u2014a condition characterized by larger-than-normal red blood cells in a smaller-than-normal amount. It can cause diarrhea, pale skin, lightheadedness, shortness of breath, swollen and red tongue, and bleeding gums.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"27\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hsph.harvard.edu\/nutritionsource\/vitamin-b12\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.hsph.harvard.edu\/nutritionsource\/vitamin-b12\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Other symptoms\" data-node-id=\"27.0\" class=\"body-link css-10fnnmt emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Other symptoms<\/a> of vitamin B12 deficiency include memory loss, fatigue and weakness, nerve damage causing numbness and tingling in the arms and legs, dementia, depression, and seizures.<\/p>\n<p>When to Take a Vitamin B12 Supplement<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"29\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\"><strong data-node-id=\"29.0\">CONSIDER A<\/strong> <strong data-node-id=\"29.2\">SUPPLEMENT<\/strong> if you can\u2019t get enough B12 from real foods and your dietary restrictions or age is making you deficient. While your fatigue might have you suspecting B12 deficiency, a blood test is the only way to know for sure.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"30\" class=\"css-1ood0zq emevuu60\">If you do need to get B12 in supplement form, dietitians recommend getting a brand with a USP, Informed Choice, or NSF International Certified for Sport seal, signifying it\u2019s third-party tested. Then talk to your doctor about the best kind and dosage to take. They will be able to take into consideration your age and what B12-rich foods you already eat. You may not even need a megadose.
